My Dad lives in Robertson County and hAs a big ash tree down (lightning) He's cleaned off the liumbs and the trunk remains - free for the taking if you'll show up and cut it. I'll help but I don't operate a chainsaw.

It's big - at least two feet in diamter.

I live close enough, but don't have/feel comfortable with chainsaws yet either.

I would definitely come help you if you were gonna cut it down, Terry. An extra set of hands never hurts.

Oh yeah...I'm in New Hampshire this week. So unless you can't get there till the weekend or sometime next week I'll be out of town.

My Dad's just off Highway 76 in between Springfield and White House in Robertson County, Tennessee. This weekend would work great if folks are able to come and cut it up. I'll set it up with him as soon as we have some idea whether anyone's interested.

It's already on the ground - has been for maybe a month - not long enough to be dry or to have spalted at all. Lightning hit it and he had to cut it down. I convinced him to just leave the trunk alone.

What do you think?

You have any ashborer laws down there yet? Here it is illegal to transport ash wood out of the county that it is from. My money is on that happening to you soon if it hasn't already. It's a very serious offence too. The emerald ash borer is decimating the ash tree population in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. It is on the way to Tennessee if it isn't already there and so far nobody seems to be able to stop it. I think it's ok to transport ash if it is kiln dried, but you are going to find kiln dried ash going way up in price soon too. If there isn't a kiln in that same county as the tree, the tree can't go to the kiln! I tried wrapping my tree, which I planted a year before the borer came to be known, with a net. MSU gave me some sort of glue substance to put on the base of the tree too. Didn't matter, they got it anyhow. :(

Julia,
Your offer is tempting... you're really too far away though... I'm down in the SE corner of the state about 4 hours from your dad.. and I have to try to finish picking up a huge willow tree this week in one of the neighbor's yard..
