This is inspired by the rockhound thread. :D

I just started knife collecting/trading and just wondering if anyone is in it too. While I just keep a few for investment, I am doing it more to earn a few bucks (small time buy and sell).

I am currently concentrated on Case XX, Puma, and Henckels but grabs other quality brands if the price is right. ;)

Would love to get pointers if there are seasoned collectors out there.

Thanks!

I'm not so much a collector as I am an accumulator. [:p]
Learned long time ago that collecting knives is for the enjoyment of having fine knives, not for investment. More often than not $100.00 well spent will get you about $50.00 return when you resell. I have a Boker whittler pattern I like so much I won't carry it. I know, that doesn't make any sense at all.

Frank,

Like most things, I hardly pay retail price ;). I also have a few Boker and they are well made. Except for Case, I only buy Solingen, Germany made knives.

My best deal yet is an $8.50 Case XX estate sale find that after cleaning up sold on eBay for more than $500.00. Turned out that the knife was made in 1920. Of course it is far in between but steals can still be had.

Like USA, a lot of German knife makers are out sourcing their production to Spain and China now. [B)]

I love knives too...almost as much as I love wood and I agree with you about the joys of owning a quality knife. Preference wise, mine is a toss up between Puma and Case.

I have a whole slew of knives that I've picked up at flea markets and tag sales for as little as a quarter. I've sold some real nice cub scout and bow scout knives for a tidy profit but the best one is a TL-29 that I bought at a flea market for a buck fetched $122.50 on Ebay just because it had USMC stamped on it.

I'm also an accumulator so my knowledge is limited. To me, if it looks nice and is cheap I'll buy it and sock it away.

I was a collector, and since I still have my knives, I guess I still am. It just got too expensive, and I had a problem saying no from time to time. My collection is CaseXX, mostly tiny toothpick, tiny trapper, and trappernut. I have a few peanuts, and trappers, congress, muskrats, butterbeans, ..........See what I mean, couldn't say no!

I know!!! [xx(]

In a way it is great since there are always buyers/collectors and some really have deep pockets! :D

Shannon,

Can you recommend a good Case collector reference/price guide/book? I hear about (the late) Jim Parker a lot but not sure which one to get.

Thanks!

Dario,
I'm not a knife collector, but my brother-in-law is. He has a room in his house for his collection and it is enormous. I've spent some very enjoyable days with him enjoying the collection. Knives are facinating to collect. We make a stop at Somky Mountain Knifeworks once a year or so. That is an experience will make a knife collector (and even a casual knife affectionato) salivate. Like a well made pen, or maybe even more so, a well made knife is more art than tool, they are very satisfying to hold and to hold on to.

I have been collecting knives since I was little. As i got older my collection grew to over 1000 knives and most are handmade customs at this point. I do have a good amount of factory knives also. I kind of lost interest in it and started to collect antique and limited edition or hard to find firearms. I found that the best place for me to find some interesting old or custom knives was at the NY custom knife show in November.

Dario l think you've let the cat outta the bag now mate!:D
One of my best knife's is a folding knife which was custom made, it also won a best of show in Aust. l was at the knife show when it won and l could not resist it cost me a arm and a leg .
:D

Hi Dario!

I love knives! I only have ten or fifteen (I have more measuring tapes!), and I am a user. If a knife wants to be with me, it has to consent to being used! [8D] I have one nice Boker, a couple of Kershaw's, and assorted others. I have a couple of custom made knives just because I admire the workmanship. But this is one more collecting obsession that I would prefer to keep at a low simmer!!! [:0]

Have fun!

Scott.

Johnnie & John,

Customs are very expensive and I've been drooling on some Randall (fixed) knives but I'll have to be content on looking at pics for now.

As I said, much as I love knives and want to keep them, I do this more for re-sale. Maybe I'll really collect when my status improves.

Scott, I have a few used knives (Case, Schrade USA) and love the blades. Don't have the nerve using a mint knife though LOL.

I used to buy and sell knives both on eBay and at the local flea market mall. I had three different price guides. They were all the same but different in some respects, pricing, descriptions, etc. What I didn't find in one then usually I found in the others.

I gave them to my brother so I don't have the names of them but they were the most popular and most advertised at the time.

John,

Please do, I'd love to see it. A lot of people post photos of other stuff. I think others won't mind. ;)

Here comes a dumb question, Are switch blade & stelleto knifes considered collectable? Joe S.

Check current laws before stating if you own a switchblade knife. Cannot give blanket answer to your question. Collectible, like anything, depends on many factors. Age, rarity, quality and whether someone wants to buy it. But anything is 'collectible' if you just like having it.

Although I don't collect knives, I have kept the same knife in my pocket for over 3 yrs now, and that is a MIRACLE! I have broke off the tip a few times, but just sanded the knife back into shape. I use it every day to cut shrink wrap off pallets. Just a cheapo $20 knife [^]

Hi Dario, I love knifes and swords, I have a few hundred different blades and a lot of them I made, i have a forge and have made damascus but I have not done so in a few years, I still have some blanks and billets I made and I need to finish them, when I do finish them I will post a picture of them.
I think it is neat so many of us like wood and knifes, aloha.

Kalai:)

I don't collect them but I trade and sell them to get other ones. But I use them all. The very best knife I have ever used is my Benchmade model 551. I've dropped it, stepped on it and drove over it once and you can't tell other than some wear on the clip. I have carreed it everywere with me for the last 2 years, it has saved me many times.
When it comes to knifes you have to pay to get the good stuff.

Dario this is the knife l was talking about, sorry my photos are crap.

John,

That sure looks unique, especially the lock release.

Is the design carved or cast? It looks much deeper than etching. The mother of pearl handle is also very nice.

I can't read the blade etching, I assume it is the makers trademark.

Sure is a keeper. [^]

My favorite carrying knife is a customized Buck 110 automatic. I don't leave home without it. It is not legal to carry, but I figure who cares since I have a concealed pistol permit and most of the cops I know carry them also. I got it as a gift from one of them and he knows that it is always with me. I used to have a dangerous weapons permit, which would have made it legal, but some idiot decided to do away with those in this state. I may have 1 or 2 damascus knife blanks sitting around if anyone is looking for one.

What state do you live in? I am in Texas so it is very common around here to carry a knife in plan sight. Even handguns aren't that big of a deal in some places.
The police did give me hell in Houston once for having my knife on me but they let me keep it.

I'm in CT. and we are allowed to carry a knife as long as it is single edged and it must have a sharpened edge of less than 4 inches. I don't think anyone cares if it is showing or not, I carry mine on my belt always. The laws here are written a little strange. You can carry a knife, but if you are carring a screwdriver, it is illegal unless you are working. I had one on me while I was riding one day, it was for adjusting my carb and some rookie gave me all kinds of speeches. After maybe 10 minutes another cop pulled up, looked at my liscense and pistol permit and told me to have a nice day.
