I have the 7 x 10 from HF and I love it. I do most of my acrylics on it and all of my antler pens. I do not have a milling machine but I might soon. I do not think you would be disappointed with the 7 x10. Reed
I use a Sherline 4500 to turn my pens. It could be used for metal or wood they also sell a vertical mill.
I upgraded the motor to a 1/4hp DC----really made the lathe work better.
I am wanting one to turn metal parts for pens and other projects. I've been doing a little research and it seems the HF unit is the base for several different brands available. Even found a site that provides many tips and upgrade/tune ups for these little lathes. Might need to take a trip and go see one in person.
I have a Harbor Freight 9x20 metal lathe. The pen turning projects I have done with it are to make drive collars for my mandrels to work with my wood lathe(s), make a bushing for the designer pen to replace a lost one, and to drill smallish blanks for a large pen in the 4-jaw chuck.
There is a guy on ebay that sells a Sherline that is set up on a CNC that will do everything but wash windows---I think that's what he said--------LOL. He gets something like 3K for it.
Hey Greg ..... just a little reminder ... if you're thinking about that HF metal lathe ... the 30% coupon ends on March 12. A couple of HF stores have refused to take it ... but mine and most others accepted it. (I used mine last weekend to buy a table saw).
Al, thanks for the reminder but I am still a few months out on this purchase. Just doing my homw work. If I had the extra $$ at the moment there is a nice used 9 x 20 on ebay within about an hours drive from me.
Bruce Could be. I have owned a Sherline in the past and used it primarilly for my slot cars. I've also owned a South Bend w/48" bed. I know where there is an early model CNC Bridgeport mill gathering dust but that is more machine than I want.
Joe Thanks for the link but that was the site I was referring to in my second post. Awesome site!!
I have the HF 7x10, most of the 7x10 are made by the same manufacturer (Seig ?). I found one right after I bought mine for $400+ on Homier.com for $299. Same exact lathe just different color. If I wouldn't have had mine all cleaned up I would have took it back. Maybe use the 20% off coupon for that purchase?
