I picked out a piece of wood in a blank swap a few months ago. I gust got around to cutting it. The wood smells like Vicks Vapor Rub and maybe a little Lemon. The blank was unmarked and looks kind of like a Walnut blank I got at the same time. Just wondering if its normal or if the wood picked up the sent from something it was around or possibly soaked in.

No pics sorry

Thank you.
Reminds me of childhood. The new Vicks liquid stuff they self just dont pack the punch of the original.

Would this not be determined on how much of the stuff you drink?

Argggggg!

I would agree with the assumption the others have made that it is probably Camphor. However, a picture would be of a bit more assistance ... especially if the bark is available.

I have a piece I turned of Camphor that is dark as walnut so I would say Camphor. I have an unturned piece that is light also.

Matt, if you can, bring it to the meeting this weekend. I am bringing up some camphor for someone and we can compare them.

I would also bet dollars to donuts that it's camphor...

Think Campho-phynique (sp).... they used to use camphor oil to make that stuff. One of my favorite woods because of the smell!

It is going to be one of the pens for the troops. I just was wondering what wood(s) have this smell. May need to stock up for next winter when I get a cold. Also wanted to make sure that the wood wasn't one that needs a repirator.

Camphor grows everyhere here in Florida. If someones cuts down or trims a camphor tree you can smell it from a good distance. I just follow my nose and it will lead me right to it. Camphor comes in all colors, light and dark. Here is an example. If it smells like Vicks it has to be Camphor. I love working with it.

Matt,
Instead of making at home, bring it as one of the turning ones for the meeting. Rob has both camphor and sassafras, so you might be able to do a comparisson

I am just preping the kits. This is to be turned at the meeting along with lace, walnut, cherry and one other I can't remember.

Sassafrass smells like fruit loops, and was used to make teas and root beers until California decided it caused cancer. I think EVERYTHING causes cancer there!
