Hi,

Have this fairly big plank that's been stored for 40 odd years, and Ive just got hold of it and planned the dust and dirt of the edge, but I haven't got a clue what it is!

The grain is straight, but fibres running in parallels run in different directions. It very heavy and pretty dense. Also the cgrain is fairly open, like mahognay.
Dave (rarest woods) has give me an I.D, but just seeing what you guys think of it!

The darker area is an application of danish oil, just to show what its like finished!

I really new at this pen turning and idntifying wood stuff, but it looks to me like it could be Argentine Lignum Vitae.

Gee you win this week Blank ID contest and you can't figure this one out. I demand a re-count ;-). No really, it does look a lot like Bubinga. Bubinga is pretty heavy, has that purply mauve color, and sometimes has grain like that. Bubinga also often has that darker streaking. Bob I.

Dave thought it was Bubinga?

But all the Bubinga I have had is much darker, and the fibres all ran in the same direction?

But Daves seems to know his stuff!

I'm guessing that the board was much darker beofre you planed it. As with most woods it darkens with age. I've also found that there is a fair amount of variability in shades of bubinga. Bob I.

Well the board I have is 12 feet long and a foot wide and 2-3 inches thick, so im guessing its not sapwood!

Im going to compare it too my other bubinga samples and see what I come up with, ill try and get a picture of the board too, as it has a great figure to it when you move the board similar to mahogany or African walnut, as the grain patterns are similar to both.

I truly doubt it is afromosia or sapele. Afromosia is more a yellowish brown and sapele is a nice brown (the best way I can describe is it it about the same color as a Chocolate Lab. dog)

o the size of the board is also a clue bubinga comes in really big boards too I mean really big ones im certain its bubinga interesting that bob picked that out as a possible perhaps you could send me a penblank and I will be sure on seeing it dont forget bubinga is from a couple of species or three so they will vary a lot. aformosia is a no go Ive had boards of that stuff and have 28 cube of sapeli sitting in my wood store so ime sure its not those send us a bit when youve cut it all up
