I have a friend at work. His wife is in the Air Force and on her 2nd tour in Iraq right now. She is returning in a couple months and I was thinking of doing a pen for her. He and I were talking and he liked the idea (her birthday is right after she returns) and was thinking of the air force camo.

So has anyone seen a blank in the air force camo or are any of you casting experts willing to make me a couple blanks. Here is a picture of the camo. It says it is a subdued mix of tan, blue and two shades of green.

Thanks
Tom

I gotta ask!!

There is desert camo, to look like the desert--got it!
There is jungle camo, to hide in the jungle--got it!
WHAT is the purpose of "Air Force" Camo??? Hide in the clouds??? Isn't the plane kind of a "give away"??

Unfortunately all of the armed forces seem to have created their own color scheme for each branch. I work with the Air force Training school and see varied BDU's every day. From the foreign national odd colored uniforms to the wilder digital print, the standard camos available just don't cut it. they are great for the general hunter, but don't match any of the real color schemes. Since they are all that is offered, the military folks I've sold to bought them, but several have commented that they kind of stand out against their uniform.

I figure someone is going to tell me I need to make my own, and that may be on the radar. But, for now, we work with what we have.

You might think about hitting the thrift store and picking up an old uniform and making a blank in PR. Never know it might be a big seller among the military folks.

The Navy just recently went with a camo to blend in with the ocean...falling overboard just got more dangerous! I think it has to be a recruiting tool!

So we can blend in with the concrete on the flightline.....lol.....sad but I'm thinking its true.

One our blank makers over here in the UK, Mervyn Cadman, recently experimented with airbrushing the tube with a camo pattern then casting clear. It turned out beautifully.

Maybe an idea??

I've seen denim cast...pondering if anyone has taken cammie material and cast it.

If I sent someone some old cammies (Marine for me - desert and woodland) would someone be willing to cast it for a fee?

I'm reluctant to pick up yet one more hobby...I am awash in them.

Sorry to steal your thread, but someone may take some AF cammie and do the same?

Sean

If you cast the actual cloth, the pattern is gone.

The pattern fits an adult, a pen gets only a small patch, which turns out looking like one or two colors.

We have a couple camos, but I am not wild about them. And the "designer" colors they show are certainly NOT camo--but they ARE pretty!!! (We don't handle those, but Beartooth has a couple)

I have not completed one to my satisfaction but I am doing attempting to do just that but using "GI Joe" type uniforms. Same patterns on a much smaller, tighter scale, so it keeps the pattern on pen sized things. I'll post pics if I ever get it right. If one of our better casting masters would take this idea and complete it, I'd be grateful as I am still learning to use PR. I have previously only used Alumilite and it did not seem to work so great for clear casting.

Landon,
A patterned fabric will, usually SCREAM at the seam.

We've played with ideas--but nothing has ever "hit me" as a good one.

Like your idea of using "GI Joe" though!! Wish you success!!

What if you scanned the fabric, reduced it down and printed it on white decal material. You could then wrap the tube with the decal and cast in PR.
