I recently took my pcs in to have viruses removed they installed avg antivirus software on the pcs. now both my pcs are slower then yeck. alot of time they will time out before loading a web site. I was wondering what is a good free anti virus that I can down load. I had microsoft essential installed but it did not detect the viruses which I got. the pc wasn't slow before installing avg.

I use AVG and have not noticed a slow down. It is the only free one that is any good. Norton sucks and McAfee is not much better. There are features you can disable in avg that may cause a problem. Go to their site and read about features. They can be disabled.

The only one I have used on many computers is AVG Free, I found out about it through my Dad who found out about it from a family friend and Computer Guru. Norton is only good for Ghost Backup, and Macaffee is known to computer people that it is one of the worst ones out there. There may also be interference if you have another program such as windows defender, or another anti Virus, they see each other as harmful and in effect cancel each other out if you have any questions PM and I can help further

think I figured it out

I uninstalled foxfire and re installed seems to have took care of everything running so slow. Hope that was the problem keeping fingers crossed.

We have been using the free version of Avast.com (home edition) for several years. It has never slowed our computers down and the newer version even detects malware. The easiest place to download it is from www.filehippo.com.

COuld be spyware that is causing it as well. I spent 2 days getting rid of a nasty bugger last week. Here is one of the newer ones I found that work: http://www.spynomore.com/ , there is also a program called http://combofix.org/ , and of course adaware, malwarebytes, and so forth I run combofix first and then the others if I don't catch it then. You can run the spynomore first just to see what it found, the free version will not remove it but it shows where it is located and you can do your deletion if you are comfortable with that. The best way to run any of these after they are installed is in safe mode as the viruses and malware normally do not load at this point. Some of the programs above cannot be installed in safe mode but combofix can as long as you are in networked safemode. PM if you have any questions

I had a slow down issue with AVG also so I switched to AVAST and now after 6 months no issues. But the biggest advantage is AVAST has a boot scan

I us McAfee. I pay for it but it is far better than any other out there. They actually get their definitions updated much faster than AVG, Avast, F-Secure and Syamntec (Norton).

It is worth it to use the paid versions IMHO.

I have been using Avast for ~7 years now. I am very pleased with it and when people ask me to work on their computers I try to steer them that way.

That's all good to know... I've used AVG, Norton, McAfee and zonealarm... I had heard that Zone Alarm was good, it almost brought my PC to a stop... I've tried to uninstall and can't ... haven't figured it out yet... I just shut it down... can reload AVG until I get rid of ZA..

I recently updated all my pc's antivirus from avast to spyware dr./w antivirus. It was a pay only program until google added it to their "google pack" and it SEEMS to have speeded my systems up some vs avast. On the advise of the professionals at the corporate IT center where I work, I keep a copy of malwarebytes on my systems for the occasional super thorough scan If I suspect a problem, but the free version of that is manual only, no scheduled updates and scans at 2 am, ect. Spyware Dr seems to be the best compromise I've found so far between fast, automatic and free.

security issue ok but slow internet

thanks for all your help got security issue taken care of but still issue with slow connections. mostly with this site, not to much with every thing else.

any ideas would be appreciated .
thanks again

I forgot to mention http://www.malwarebytes.org/, just get the free downlaod it works differently it is not an anti virus what it does is finds and takes out malware, it is the software that scammers and viruses use to collect information from your computer. I have never seen an anit virus find the malware, IT IS NOT A ANTIVIRUS, it just works along side it. the first time that I raan it on my computer there was over 400 malware on my computer.

Never run just one anti-virus program. One will never catch it all. I run Norton 360. It has so many tools and they seem to update the definitions in a timely manner.

I am also running AVAST. It has a great e-mail and web scanner, and they also update their def in a timely manner.

You will need a spyware program as well. Spyware Doctor is good, but can get a little laggy. Spyware S&D is not bad either. I have SD and only run every night when I am asleep. I do not allow it out of it's cage to rome and scan as it wishes. SD needs to be on a short leash IMHO.

I am not sure why people bash other programs. Seems that it is a lot of personal opinion backed up with no actual facts. To say something sucks is such an ignorant (which means uninformed) statement. I always laugh when one person says that another persons favorite sports team "sucks". They couldn't actually come up with a logical, well thought out, well communicated arguement as to why they think the team "sucks". They just verbally vomit it out there, as if someone is actually going to give weight to someone saying that something "Sucks!".

? I have never had an issue running more than one anti virus program. Windows defender is not an antivirus program, it is a spyware program. Spyware programs can see other spyware programs as a threat.

How could two antivirus programs scanning for viruses "cancel each other out"?

I used windows defender as an example it can cause issues in some computers.

The reason that two Antivirus' software can cancel each other out is because they both see each other as a virus, they will quarentine the parts of the other program that search your computer for actual viruses. It creates a loop hole for viruses to get in to your computer.

I am not sure that what you are sying is acurate. The only thing to keep in mind is you cannot run two on access antivirus programs at once. But you can run two or more on demand scanners on your computer with no problems. As the below articles points out. As I have for years with NO problems. Norton is my on access and I use AVAST once every few days.

I am not going to argue this point but the information I was using came from two separate computer techs that their job is just computers, They both have been working on computers for around 20 years+. i tend to trust it more than websites.

I've heard the same about running two anti virus programs. I was told don't do it. they confuse each other. My internet had slowed down to where I could make a cup of coffee while I waited. I've been using Firefox. A few days ago I tried Chrome. Much faster and doesn't freeze like Firefox.
Try it, you might like it.

I use Kaspesky Internet security at home and it works like a dream!
Tried Mcafee for a few years and it slows down my pc, so no good!
Norton does the same to me!

I use Trend at work and that seems to keep me safe!

The free version of malwarebytes is great at removing spyware and stuff you think would be a good idea to install until it takes over your computer!

We also use a lot of Avast at work, because it is free and seems to work quite well!
