I saw somewhere someone made a vacuum chamber out of a one gallon pickle jar. I have an air conditioner evac. pump and was thinking about trying that but was afraid that it may implode. Now I just read another thread about making a clear cover for the HF container and it imploded. What do you guys think?

I've used the same type of vacuum pulls 27 Hg I think and no problems. I used the same metal cover though. No need for use plexi since the glass is clear! If you want to be safer, wrap it with clear packing tape.

Using this type of vacuum have its own problems....due to deep vacuum, most liquid will vaporize (or boil). DAMHIKT

Good luck!

Yeah, I have heard that there is no such thing as a perfect vacuum but this little pump is like "the little train that could" It will run it's heart or motor:confused: out trying to.
That was my concern about imploding a glass jar.

I would be leary of using glass. I regularly operate 4 vacuum chambers and use 1" thick plexiglas with gaskets as lids. After a while even they develop hairline cracks and need to be replaced. My concerns would be that there may be an unknown, undetectable defect in the glass that would allow it to implode under strong vacuum.

When I'm testing new equipment I throw a couple of old pillowcases over everything to help contain any "shrapnel" in the event of a mishap. Haven't had to test the integrity of them as of yet so I can't testify as to the effectiveness. Makes me feel safer though.
