I've been a member of Front Range Woodturners for the last several years, and last night was kind of a high point, although I always enjoy going.

First, I met Ed (Turned Around) from IAP, and what a great guy! He does very nice pens, and his finish is really very good. He hasn't been doing it all that long, and he's light years ahead of where I was at when I'd been doing it as long as he has. But maybe even more interestingly, he does microscopic digital photos of slices of wood! I'll let him explain it, it's really quite a process. Boils the wood, THEN takes less-than paper thin slices and mounts them on slides. Then dyes them, then fires away. Like I said, he's better at 'splaining it, but really quite fascinating. Plus, he won a very nice chunk of honey locust in the raffle. Beginner's luck, I guess.

Next, Trent Bosch demo'd his "Vessels of Illusion". If you've never seen this guy, you owe it to yourself to do so. He's really big on unlocking the artist within. His stuuf is crazy great, but he spends as much time teaching how to find your voice, and I think that's as important as any technique. He's really passionate about his art. If you take a class from him (he's only a few hours from me) you eat breakfast and lunch at his family's table, with his family! That's different. Anyway, what a demo.

Third, I took advantage of CSUSA's discount program to our club, and I suspect to any AAW-sponsored club. It's a bit complicated, but bottom line is if we order a few hundred pens (no problem), the discount is about 40%! That brings a Statesman down to around a Gent price, and that's tough to beat. I ended up getting about 600 bucks worth of product for around 360. That's a really good deal.

If you don't belong to an AAW-sponsored Turner's Club, I personally think you're missing one of the best resources available to a turner. AAW does so many great things to advance this craft, and we all benefit from it. Scholarships, Symposiums, education, insurance, discounts, so many things come out of those puny dues.

I drive an hour each way to get to mine, find one in your area and check it out! And again, Ed, it was so great to meet you last night! Wait 'till you see our Christmas Party! You better come hungry.

oooooohhhhh lol.

My turning club is AAW. Where can I find the specifics on the discount they offer?
I'm guessing you should check with your club to see if they have negotiated the discounts.

Our turning club just negotiated club discounts with Hartville Tools and I got my "welcome aboard" email just today from Hartville. Looks like we get 20% off everything, at least everything I have looked at so far!

I'm going to look into the Craft Supply discount.

Yes he did, but you were too busy looking at the Featured Pen photo to notice!!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

DING DING DING DING!!!! Bullseye!

Don, I emailed you a month or 2 ago with the particulars, never heard back. Now, it's the first Tues. of the month, Rockler on Colorado. If you want to ride down with us, we leave from Parker, which might not be convenient for you, but there it is. Gotta call me if you want a ride. I think Cindy Drozda is next month. She's one of our members, and she's unreal. Trent was incredible.

There, now it's in the public record. Bill, Woody and George are witnesses. Can't say I didn't tell ya now! Quit lookin' at the featured pen, you're gonna go cross-eyed. By the way, congrats, it's awesome.

Woody, I'd be surprised if CSUSA didn't have the same deal for any AAW club that wanted it, but like George said, check it out with your guys. Or start it up yourself! We have Hartsville, Klingspor, Holdfast (I think) glue, and about 5 others on a discount plan. Can't really lose, except you have to wait a month to get your stuff, and I'm sometimes in a rush. Oh, no shipping with CSUSA too. I have an order in as of last night for 600 bucks, let's see, add about 40-50 bucks into the savings.

Good Luck!

Well, last night I got to hook up with Don (DurocShark) at our meeting! Great guy, he showed me his VW bus. Very cool, Don! He did a lot of woodworking in it.

Cindy Drozda was our demonstrator, what a talent she is. What gets me about these folks is not their technique (although incredible), it's their almost unconsciously confident manner. I mean, she's turning finials about as thick as a needle, and she's holding the end and bending it to show how flexible it is! I'd snap that sucker right off.

Plus, I got my first order through Craft Supplies, over 600 bucks worth of stuff for a bit less than 400! The math works for me! We were lucky, we had a huge overall order so got the max discount, plus no shipping fee. Now, I have plenty to get ready for Summer shows.

Anyway, great to meet you, Don! Let's get together soon. You know I'm having my shop tour May 24th at 1:00. Hope to see you then, and any other Coloradans are welcome too!

It was a nice group. Some amazing work was shown there. And Cindy was, as usual, a terrific demonstrator.

My bus decided it didn't like the attention and grew a vacuum leak while we were inside. Took a minute to find it and fix it when we were trying to leave. heh

Thanks for talking me into going. I think I'm gonna have to sign up, even if I can only attend once every few months.
