I tried regular carbide cutters again, since this is different wood than my first one. Still had lots of tear out, this is an end grain blank. I switched to negative rake and it cleaned tear outs right up. Definitely negative rake is the way to go on these

I appreciate that you are sharing your experience on this. I probably missed it from an earlier post, but how did HSS compare to the carbide? It would certainly have to maintain a razor sharp edge; lots of honing.

HSS tools had major tearing too, even a very sharp skew.
