Hi All, new to pen making.
Interested in all the different materials you can make a pen from.
Has anyone created a list?

Welcome

As you delve deeper into the rabbit hole you will find a large variety of materials which can be turned. I don't know of a list, but check in the IAP Library to find articles about turning all sorts of pens. Also check the "Show Off Your Pen" section to see what others have made. If you get into casting only your imagination will limit what you can use to make a pen. There have been pens made from flowers, breakfast cereal, sea shells, rice, nuts, and a variety of other items.

Have fun!

Hello Rodney and welcome from Utah, USA.

What can't you make a pen from....??

Welcome . The way I look at it , the list includes everything that is not gaseous , has or is capable of being dried to a moisture content of 13% max but preferably less than 6% , has an oil content of less than 50% , and is a bit softer than diamond . The last criteria determines the quality and type of tools required for the job . Many of the materials must be cast into a plastic to allow their use . I think that gives you enough in your sandbox to play around with for a year or two .

Greetings from Nebraska and welcome to the IAP community. I'm not familiar with any list of materials, but I envy you because of all of the amazing and beautiful timbers that are native to Australia and New Zealand. One of my very favorites is Hairy Oak especially when it is diagonal or cross cut like the one in this linked post by Casey Giddins (CjG78). - Dave

Welcome from Albuquerque Rodney. You can browse the pen kit and blank supplier websites, lots of different materials.
