As cool as the iPhone is, I just couldn't bring myself to deal with that phone company . . .

So last night I ordered up two HTC G1 phones, one for me and one for Wife. We will be wanting to find some cool apps to load on the new phones. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Scott.

A lot of it depends on YOUR taste and what you want to load on your phone.

Here are a few I use:

Colornote
Compass
Barcode scanner
Mabilo Ringtones
Movies
Picsay
Droidlight
Weatherbug
Mobile defense - very, very cool. You can remote lock you phone in case you lose it. You can even use GPS to find it.

I like the mabilo ringtones, althought haven't used it for but one ringtone, but used it for background pictures on my contacts- very nice selection.

I use Shop Savvy as a barcode scanner, seems like other people mentioned other versions of the same thing but that's the one I ended up downloading.

I also use "Task Killer"- there's an "Advanced Task Killer" which costs but the regular one is free. They recommended a task killer at the store where I bought my phone, saying that it'll extend battery life because it basically can quickly shut down things that you aren't using that tend to stay one after you actively quit using them- like if you use the navigation program to find an address and then click out of it once you get there, it keeps running in the background and sucks battery life out. This one seemed to get the best reviews from everything I read, but there is some ongoing disagreement over whether a task killer is necessary or whether it does actually extend battery life, but I decided it seems to extend battery life on mine since I downloaded it.

You might want to check out this website for more expert opinions:

http://androidforums.com/

Or they might more appropriately be called more "fanatics" opinions- it's the type of website where people obsessively measured their battery life before and after downloading the task killer, quoting you how many apps they had running at the time, what phase the moon was in at the time... You know, kind of like some of our members here might talk about their bandsaws!

I LOVE my Droid!

I use regularly:
WheresMyDroid
WeatherChannel
Home++
SportsTap
Soduku (don't ask)
SpacePhysics (game)
Bejeweled (game)
Mobillo ringtones (free ringtones)
Facebook

And a few more, but that's off the top of my head.

I have the samsung moment and love it. I use droid coupons, a-online radio, stream furious and sticher,(listen to news feeds radio stations and podcasts)aldiko (free book downloads) solitare, google sky maps is really cool, gdocs,( store any documents online and view them on you droid) I have sprint and the navigation app is great. I was at a turners club board meeting last week and the average age is about 65 and everyone of them use their smart phones constantly. I highly recommend an android platform phone. I chose the samsung moment for the slide out qwerty keyboard as well as touch screen. also the display is very close to HD quality

All in all I can't say enough good things about android phones

I guess I'm one of the last of my kind... I don't have a cell phone, I don't want a cell phone.. if you want to call me, call me on my landline and maybe I'll be home to answer or maybe I won't.... I just don't want to be that connected to the world.

Chuck, I guess you and I are both old fashioned, the only difference is I do have a cell phone that my daughter gave each of us for christmas. Noticed I said
"PHONE" all I know how to do is make and receive calls and thats all I want it for, I watched my grandson vist us this christmas and he had his nose and fingers stuck in his cell for the entire 2 days.

Task Killer is what I use the most. USA Today, the Weather Channel, if you google droid apps there were several articles written about the top 10, and top 50 apps for android phones.

Well, since this is two days old I assume you probably got your phone by now. I also assume, like I did myself, that you probably "accidentally" spent hours going through the app store in amazement at what the darn thing can do:rolleyes: Pretty much everything mentioned is useful, the few not mentioned that I use all the time are:

Shazam (listens to a song playing and identifies and finds it)
Tubedroid (downloads Utube clips as audio MP3 files)
Iheartradio (plays FM station streams out of market)
I will second the taskkiller, makes a huge difference in battery life
Also, the POWER widget (allows you to control GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and others right on the homescreen. GPS will suck your battery dry and most programs that use it don't shut it off when they are done)
FindStarbucks (cant go wrong with that:), uses GPS to find you and navigate you to the closest starbucks)
And of course, you can put an IAP bookmark right on your homepage too!

Have fun
