Then I mixed up a batch of Plexi-tone to fool with for both stabilazation and finishing. I opened up the jar today and the smell made PR pleasant by comparison. I think I will have to reserve this witches brew for days that I can keep the garage doors open and run a fan.

I think I put in too much plexiglas as there is now a 3/4" thick layer of plexi goo on the bottom of the jar that is effectively invisible. It has the same color and index of refraction as the stuff in solution. I transfered the liquid to another jar, and refilled the first jar with fresh Acetone. I suspect that I will end up with well over a quart of supersaturated plexitone in the end.

I always keep the mother jar going with the saturated stuff. Pour off what you need, dilute it as needed, and feed the mother jar. Just like sourdough.:)

Make sure to keep the lid on tight, the acetone evaporates very quickly.

Ah.. I wish I knew you needed it. I've got jars everywhere.

I bought a sheet (30x60) and figured I'd make a gallon or so.

A few gallons later, I'm still trying to melt the bottom of that first can.
And I've still got boxes of smashed plexi hidden all over.
And yeah.. it stinks!

Not sure what everybody is going after here but would it make any difference if you used shavings/sawdust from the acrylic sheets. A friend has an acrylic fabrication shop and I have access to tons of the sawdust from cutting the sheets.

Andy.. it would work just fine (even better than sheets) as long as it is
clean. You don't want any foreign material in it.
Just add acetone, shake and go!

Andy,
As noted above no foreign material (especially lexan.)
When I asked at my local fabricator he used the same saws for both materials so I ended up with using scraps instead. His scrap was approx 9" x 4foot long.

I did not realize that you had the stuff lying around, I just decided to try it on a lark and got about $3 worth of plexi at the borg, which I can see now will be good for many gallons of Plexitone.

Charlie,
If you want to get rid of a gallon or so, I would be glad to buy it off you at the next meeting

I was doing a search on finishing with plexi-tone, and this is one that came up.

By the way, I am up to 314, so I need to do something to get some of my posts deleted so I can get back to 308:wink:
