survivorship bias - they aren't making videos of those who got mangled.
 
I remember seeing a guy with no arms turning with his feet, working in a similar way.
Props to him.Probably a better spindle turner than most of us, including me.
 
I've got a set of Gazelle book ends that I bought over 50 years ago. I was stationed in a country most people can't find on a map. It was very remote and so primitive that most would hate trying to live there. Anyway, there was a local that worked on base and he and I became friends. One Saturday he takes me to this wood shop where they hand carved a bunch of stuff including the book ends. Needless to say, the carving tools they used were very primitive, things I'd never seen. But the work they did was fantastic and beautiful. For $5.00 U.S. I picked up the bookends from the shop. They're beautiful to say the least. I did notice however that many of the workers were missing fingers or parts of fingers. But they all seemed happy for my purchase.
