Ancient Bog Oak - Executive

Turned a piece of Ancient Bog Oak and I will say that trying to turn this blank was NOT fun. Had to sharpen my tools twice, not that the wood was so hard it was the wood itself. The finish is wet sand with walnut oil to 12000 grit and 7 coats of Pens Plus and 4 coats of wax. I loved the outcome more than the turning. Hope everyone is staying home safe.

Yes, the outcome is always the thing to look forward to. . But the process can also be fun. . However, that often depends on the material you are turning. Bog oak can be challenging, both for the reason you mention and also because of the black dust created (more of a problem if your blank also features some segments of lighter-colored wood).

With your finishing method you have nicely preserved the "wrinkled, ancient" look .... I like that ... except when I also think of my age. !!!

As a new turner I may have been lucky with the cat pen I made with bog oak. I was very happy with the results. I really like the open grain look. The special person who received this pen also liked it....and, that's what matters most to me.
