Epoxy is very bad about gassing. What this means is you will have trouble with air bubbles. Cost is usually higher for epoxy as well.

In my early days of casting, I used several versions of the System3 epoxy system. It has worked for both clear and colored casts and I still sometimes use a 2 part system for some fill on carved pieces but no longer for entire blanks. It is softer than PR, is more difficult to get a high gloss shine, usually more expensive, but it will work.

I've used a fair bit of epoxy, for casting coffee beans, as here in Aus the epoxy stabilizer is better than the water based alternative (we don't have access to your good stuff). I had no problems with bubbles, but you do have to watch the thickness of cast. Small pen blank size is fine, but try a big lump to cut up after casting and you will have problems, the heat build up can make it effectively boil.
