An old hunk of wood

A whole bunch of years ago I "collected" this piece of wood from a guy who didn't know what he had. After all these years of sitting around in the 4 different shops I finally found it again and brought it home to its final home. For the life of me I couldn't remember what species of wood it was and why it was cut like firewood. So yesterday I did a check on it and cut a small piece off on the band saw. Needless to say I was very happy with the outcome of the cut and will use this piece of Walnut for pens and knife scales. I wonder how much old stuff I might find as I finally clear out my last shop.

Yep, Pic 2 definately looks like Walnut. What does it measure? About 3"x4"x8"?

12" long by around 5" square. It's Walnut for sure, smells just like Walnut too.
