Thanks for allowing me to join the IAP! I actually have not yet turned a pen, but I have a new Beginner's Kit from Rockler and am about ready to start learning the processes!

I also started with the Rockler Beginner's Kit - I think you'll have fun with it and will quickly want to add to it. My suggestion for one of the first things to add is a Mandrel Saver like one of these .

Ah. I see the rationale behind it now... I haven't had a chance yet to use my kit yet, but I do see the potential issues. I have a Nova live center set for my tailstock. I could see possibly turning an interface which would work with it to support the mandrel.... I'll have to play with it and see how it goes.
