We see lots of threads here regarding Amboyna burl. Here's a link to the site of a guy who hand-makes Amboyna burl rocking chairs (at $35K per copy).

Here's the link:

Of particular interest -- this page has a number of photos and a paragraph explaining how he buys, mills, and dries his burls.

Other pages in the site have lots of photos and a description of how he builds them.

Amazing...

Oh my... I'd be afaid to sit in it....
What a beautiful piece of work...
I had no idea you could get large enough pieces to make something like this...

glad I don't know him, I'd be tempted to break off a stave and make a few pens!

Please send me the client that will spend $ 35K for a chair...I think they need a $ 1500 Jr. gent

I keep asking myself... Why? but I guess if he sells them, why not. Its very beautiful but I dont think I would have made a chair out of it. gunstock or recurve bow... maybe. Im just not a rocking chair guy.

I saw this before, and while I was surprised at the workmanship and the beauty
of the wood, I think it makes one ugly chair!

I agree with you on that one, the burl should have been used as accent pieces. That is just my opinion, I'm sure there is a buyer out there somewhere for it.

And just think, there are people out there who say:

"Why would anyone want a wood pen? And why use a nice piece of wood like that for something you are going to scratch and ding, and probably loose."
or
"Why would someone spend $xxx on a piece of wood like that when it's just a pen?"
Of course, I commented back with, "Why are you wearing a piece of dirt on your hand?" in reference to the diamond she is so proud of.
And those comments have been made by people who work in the same place as homquer and I.

Charlie and Neil, I do agree, excellent workmanship and design (Almost Maloof-like(oops, did I say that out loud too?)). However, I do agree that the figure in the wood overpowers the rest of the chair, which is something Sam Maloof would probably agree with.
