A co-worker / friend from SE Asia came to Japan for some work and stayed with us for three days. He brought me a gift - an amboyna burl. It is beautiful!

It was rough cut but I ran it across the planer on each side and the grain came alive. Then, I applied some BLO and the colors just screamed out!

Where the radiating beams are - I want to make a bowl out of it but I hate the amount of waste would come from it. I still don't know which way I will cut it.

Very nice piece Hank!

I would cut slabs of it parallel the face of your last picture (one showing the eyes) then cut blanks out of it.

If you want a bowl out of it...it will depend on the shape you want to turn. Less waste I can find that will leave you lot of premium wood for blanks is a diamond "brilliant" cut from the tapered edge. Right side of your 1st, 3rd & 4th pic. Left of 2nd pic. The sap area will be the top and the pointy part will be your foot area.

Good luck!

Instead of a bowl, how about a small platter - less waste than a bowl. However, I would be more tempted to make a hollow form out of the thick end. Beautiful burl.

If you want to make a bowl, NOW might be the time to invest in one of those tools that slices out the guts in a solid piece (I would put a "thumbs up" smiley here)

Cheers!

Gotta agree, time to invest in a coring tool. This way you can make a nesting set of bowls! Great gift! Enjoy!

I would rub in a few more coats of oil & set it on a shelf in the house & admire it for awhile. Way too pretty to start cutting up right now. After the 'newness' wears off some, you'll have time to decide what's best.

That is what is on my mind for sure! I don't have it in my shop; it is in my living room!

I wish I had a friend like that

But I did manage to pick this up today. So, if there's room, I'll share your gloat with you...

I hope you have many more.

>:p

I didn't mention what it actually cost me as a gift. Two weeks ago, my daughter came to Japan to visit and brought a few goodies including an Allan Lacer "Skew" DVD. I watched it twice. Then my buddy saw it. It was gone! I bought it on Marc's recommendation. Thanks Marc! I can't wait to see what you are going to do with that piece of burl.
