Will Alumilite with a 1/4" hole drilled in it reliably operate a slimline twist mechanism without installing a piece of brass tube?

I am contemplating half-filling a .308 case with Alumilite and drilling it out to make my pocket bullet pens, rather than gluing in a piece of brass tube.

Not sure this will work long term and don't want to waste the money on maybe. Hopefully, somebody here can advise me on this.

Got an order this afternoon for 15 of them to be delivered NLT Friday, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx.

I don't know about the durability of the alumilite, but my recollection from cleaning out some tubes was that 1/4" was not the right size to match the inside of the tube. I want to say that an I was the correct size.

I can check this evening if you like.

You might want to PM Curtis (Mesquiteman). He is an expert on Alumilite.

I would give it a try, based on my experience. I think it will work....but alas, no guarantees...

Thanx for the reminder Chip. I'll give him a shout.

Fibonacci - I am planning to pour it into a .308 case to make small bullet pens. I'm sure it will be well supported on the exterior but was wondering if it would wear smooth quickly or grip the twist mechanism for quite a while.

I guess if all else fails, I can drill it out and stick a short piece of tube in it.:frown:

It appears that the answer is YES!

Gave it a try on the 20 cases I need for this order (the buyer called after I posted this yesterday and upped the order) and the couple I've drilled so far work perfectly. Will have to wait and see if it will work itself loose but Curtis seems to feel that there won't be a problem.

The biggest drawback I've seen so far is that Alumilite sets up FAAAAST! Could only get 4 or 5 cases poured before it went solid.

I'll post more fi and when I get any feedback down the road.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'd be nervous depending how much tranny length is in hole. If only the first quarter inch is in hole I'd worry about side pressure during use the long length sticking out is a lever and could break blank. If lots of tranny in hole should be fine

Hi
well im in the process of trying exactly this although im not casting from original blanks ... I had to turn some up based on dimensions from Bill I found that 6mm or 7/32 is the correct drill to fit slimline parts rather than 1/4 which is a tad loose. As for tube free casting so far so good I'm Using metallic powders (alluminium, brass , copper) to lace the mix. email me at stephen.french@fsmail.net if I can help more
