I cast with alumilite all the time. Measurements have to be pretty precise, and your molds have to be good. Fast set time, no smell, turns nicely. You can buff it to a good shine, but not a really high gloss.

Yes, many people cast pen blanks with Alumilite. It is all that I use and I have used hundreds of gallons of it. The best advice that I can give you...throw away Alumilite's directions! Buy yourself clear plastic cups for mixing and pour equal part of A and B BY WEIGHT into the cup. Then mix it completely with a spatula. When you first pour the 2 parts together, they will be cloudy. When the are completely mixed, it will be totally clear with no streaks. That is when it is mixed properly. Then, if you are adding color, add it at this time, NOT as Alumilite tells you to. If you are using a pressure pot (almost required) then don't worry about mixing gently since the pressure pot will get rid of the bubbles for you. I have helped around 100 people with Alumilite "issues" so far and 99% of them were because they did not mix the resin properly. Forget about the short pot life. You will have plenty of time to mix it and pour. Don't dilly dally around but don't rush it either. I usually mix 20 ounces at a time and have never had a batch go off on me before I was ready.

Thanks for that info, MesquiteMan. I just bought a small amount at my local hobby store to play with and see what I could make. I'll use your advice. Also- I just saw the videos on your vacuum chamber and Cactus Juice and they have caught my attention.

Curtis,
About an average cure time under pressure and for how long at what pressure? I just got my 1st shipment of Alumilite in last night and want to try some this week-end.

I use 75 psi but I have $400 pressure pots that are certified for higher than that. If you are using an HF pot then I would not go over about 50. I leave mine under pressure for about 20 minutes.
