Good News! My alumilite casting kit arrived.

Bad News! I have no dyes, no powders, no pressure pot, and no clue what I'm doing.

I think I am going to make a single blank mold and a pressure chamber out of 3" threaded pipe and a couple of end caps. My thought is to make a couple of worthless wood blanks out of burl scraps and maybe some spalted oak scraps.

How many blanks can I expect to make out of one 16 oz kit?

What do I need for dyes? Anyone close to Shelby NC willing to share their knowledge with a beginning caster?

Thanks,

Adam

Thanks Eric! Hopefully I can find some help a little closer.

What type of pigments do I need to look for if I decide to try this on my own?

Thanks,

Adam

Adam,

There are probably people in the Charlotte area (or nearby across the border in SC) who cast. You're going to need access to a pressure pot to get bubble-free blanks.

For transparent or translucent colors, you'll need Alumilite Dyes. Don't use pigments made for polyester or epoxy resin - they are not compatible. For more solid colors, and colors with sheen, I like to use mica powders. Coastal Scents is a very popular supplier. Craft stores may carry a limited selection as well.

Water will cause urethane resins (such as alumilite) to foam. Keep the resin away from moisture. Dont let the resin stand open too long before mixing the parts, especially on a humid day.

I hope that helps,
Eric

What's the link to the alumilite site you get yours from? Is it a 1 part or 2 part solution? I've always used PR and would like to try alumilite. Is there a big price difference? A gallon of PR from U.S Composites runs about 52.00 delivered.

Perlex powder is compatible with alumilite? And powders will give you a colored translucnet blank like liquid dyes will?
