I just got a call from Alumilite and want to let everyone know that Alumilite Crystal Clear is now called Alumilite Clear. They were forced to drop the Crystal part due to a trademark infringement threat from another company who thought they owned the word Crystal!

Alumilite Clear is the Alumilite product of choice for pen blank casting since it was formulated specifically for better polishing. Alumilite Water Clear is the original Alumilite clear product that still works great, it just does not polish up as nicely.

Just thought I would post this in case folks get confused by the new nomenclature on their website.

I find several advantages to the 'Clear' v 'Water Clear'

1) Polishes better (mentioned)
2) Less odor
3) Longer open time
4) Shorter cure time (demold time)
5) Doesn't soften as easily from heat generated by sanding, cutting etc....

Overall I find it to be a superior product for most pen blank casting applications.

Just my $0.02

Curtis,

Can Alumilite Clear be poured in sections?

Example of what I am wanting to make bottle stopper bottom pour of 3/4" oblige color, next pour 1 1/2" of clear to allow a insert of firefighter challenge coin?

Thank you for your time and help,

I wondered about that. Didn't see Crystal clear the other day on their website.

What I find stupid is how someone can claim to own a descriptive name like Crystal Clear. Especially when they call it Alumilite Crystal Clear. It would be one thing if they called it that companies exact name. Oh well. Goofy stuff.

Yep. My cat crap pen was made with alumilite in separate pours. I for the base, then I stuck the turds to it when it was cured, then poured the rest!

Curtis,
Is Alumilite Clear demolding time affected by cold weather? Mine is about 8 months old and seems to take longer in the preasure pot than usual.
Thanks for the info,
Mike

The temperature absolutely effects the cure time. I don't remember what the storage recommended temp is but my shop is generally 58-60 right now and that slows down the gel time to about 10 minutes. Last year I did not keep the shop as warm and sometimes it was in the 40's which really really slowed down the gel times and made the B side super thick and hard to pour. The colder it is, the thicker the B side will get and it will be harder to get a good mix. BUT..as long as the resin is mixed really well, I have not found the temperature all the way down to 40 to be any issue as far as the end results of the blank coming out perfect.
