Hi all
My name is Mike and I live in Leigh, Lancashire, UK. I have been interested in woodworking for a long time and in particular pen turning. Now that I have retired from work I have more time. I have turned a number of pens and sold a few. The problem we have in the UK is that it is very difficult and expensive to get hold of exotic timbers, although I like acrylic I prefer nice grained wood to turn, my problem is getting a brilliant glossy shine on the wood, any suggestions!

hello Mike

you have a few options for a high gloss finish on wood.

U-Beauts EEE followed by shellwax cream-available from the toolpost in Didcot, to get the best results I apply it by loose leaf mops.

Chestnuts high gloss spray lacquer, build up a few coats cutting back between coats then either leave the last coat or buff it to a high shine.

CA finish- lots of options do a search on here or youtube

Woodoc 20 available from phil irons- this one is fiddly and time consuming but an extremely hard wearing high gloss is achievable in just two coats.

Hi Mike, welcome aboard. I am only about 6 miles away from you here in Breightmet, Bolton. Used to do quite a bit of work in Leigh. Went past you on Friday last on the way to Axminster tools at Warrington. Hope to see some of your work on here.

Hi Mike, and welcome from the sunny south of the UK,
You have found the most comprehensive help site for any up-comming pen maker, and now that you have joined the ranks of the retired, you will have enough time to make good use of it all he he.
