I recently retired after 32 years in a law enforcement job, and with more time on my hands, I was looking to dive deeper into my watchmaking hobby. While recently shopping for a watchmaker's lathe on FB Marketplace, I stumbled across a wood-turning lathe for cheap. It just so happened it came with much of what I needed to start turning pens. Well, I bought it, and after making several slimline pens as holiday gifts, I am hooked.

I look forward to tapping into everyone's experience here on the forum.

Welcome Frank! We are a friendly sort here. "Pull up a chair, sit a spell, Ya'all come back, Ya hear!"

Be sure to check out the Library under "Resources", "IAP Library". There is a wealth of information there on all aspects of pen creation and miscellaneous small items.

Oh; I checked, there are two other members in Hawaii. Look Under "Members", "Member Map".

Welcome Frank from over the pond.

Plenty of inspiring sights , people and ideas on here. Although we've got snow currently so I'm envious of your location

A million years ago, when I started making pens, I found a sawyer in Hawaii that sent me an assortment of local woods. If I was not hooked before that, I certainly was after. Macadamia nut wood was the draw, but there are some beautiful woods you should be able to find local. I made a beautiful pen out of Hala. It was a stupid looking kit, wish I had used a better kit but the wood made up for it.

Wow, Mahalo all for the warm welcome. I already have a few friends out here who are offering up some curly Koa, Mango, and Mac Nut wood. I'll post some pics when I get around to making them into something. I'll save it for another thread, but I'll need to figure out which of these more exotic woods need to be stabilized before use. We also have plenty of Monkey Pod trees here too.

Welcome from Texas! I've tried to get away from pen making on a couple of occasions due to health issues. But I keep coming back…

Welcome from Missouri. My brother has lived in Kapolei for the last ten or twelve years. If I get out there some time, I will look you up.

Welcome! You're in for a journey now. I just retired recently myself. I dabbled in this 15 years ago, buying tools, blanks and kits. I just had to have all the coolest looking blanks. I got busy with work and moves and just boxed everything up. Now I've been unboxing and finding 1000's of blanks and 100's of kits. Enough to keep me busy for awhile. Enjoy the ride.
