Aloha everyone,my name is Thomas and I live about 20 miles south of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii.I have been building Ukuleles, jewelry boxes and other small crafts for about a year.About six months ago I decided to try my hand at turning pens. I use a Jet jwl-1220. I have turned quite a few pens and a couple razors. Mostly koa,mac nut, mango, pheasent wood, milo, and other various local woods. I have turned a couple pens out of a scrap of acrylic counter top.I will try to put a couple pics in if I can figure it out.One is Curly Koa with Ebony, the other is the counter top

Welcome Thomas, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome from Illinois! The long angle cut on the Koa/Ebony is stunning. I will be on the big island in mid March. Perhaps I could look you up. Gene

Thomas, another BIG welcome from TEXAS. Great pens - your segmenting background comes through great for the short time you have been turning pens.
