OK, I have been lurking and learning for about 6 months..........
Finally bought my lathe (Rikon 1612 or 1216), got my initial supplies (bits, kits, chissels, finishing supplies, etc). I have been collecting blanks from online for months and have a generous selection. All I need is a stand to put my lathe on. My wife has allowed me a 4 ft wide portion of my balcony for turning. I live in an apt. and no room inside since my 23 yr old came back to stake his claim.

I want to thank all of you who have come before me and shared their knowledge and expertise here. I am so fortunate to have found this place to learn and hopefully tune my talents.

Can't wait to turn my first pen and to show you photos of the results as well as how small my "workshop" will truely be.

See you soon and thanks again!

Welcome Dave.

About that stand....do you have a Harbor Freight in your area? They have one that was in a sale paper with about the same dimensions for 39 dollars.

The best to you.

Thanks all............and the suggestion for Harbor Freight was great. Found great stand for $24.95 just need to add another extra HD top of the right length.

Should turn within a week! I'll show my neophyte results.

Need Guidance

Thanks for all the kind welcomes..............I just finished assembling my first two pens. Both slimlines from PSI. They both Lock beautiful (photos to follow). I have several questions to keep me going in the right direction. Believe me I know I am no pro after two pens, however I do feel like I accomplished what I set out to do.

#1. Lathed the blanks down to 7mm bushings (Level with bushings), sanded (150 to 600 grit) 3 coats of ca / accelerator and then sanded down to 12000 with micromesh (9 pads) and then Hut polish.

Looks awesome.

#2. Problem is when I assembled the pens, the blanks do not fit 'flush" with the kit parts. The sharp edges of the (turned and finished) hang over the pen components. This creates an overhang of the blanks over pen parts.

If I finished the blanks to be level with the bushings how else can I get the turned blanks to match the pen parts so they will be flush to the touch.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave, Welcome from WV
if your gonna use ca as a finish you want to turn your blank just below your bushings, then build your ca finish up then wet sand your finish down to the proper size. (if that make sense) check out www.penturnersproducts.com most of us here TBC (turn between centers) once you get your blank turned down, swicth your bushings to delrin finishing bushings, that way you wont glue your bushings to your blank.
oh yeah, if dont have a set already, get good set of digital calipers,(measure your pen components then measure your blank ends to match.)Hope this helps and doesnt confuse ya any. cant wait to see pics of finished pens.

We need a pic Dave nothing fancy just something to show us what your talking about. My x had me doing all my work in a tinny shed, even now I am in a spare bed room you'd be lucky to get a bed in. Working in small spaces is a challange but it's definately doable and far better than just dreamin.

Welcome from Palmer Alaska!
