I was out shopping yesterday and came EVER so close to buying myself a new Nova DVR lathe. I could have picked it up for $1650 brand new which is a good price. It is big for a benchtop lathe and small for a floor lathe unless you get extenders. But I do like the silence of it and the excellent direct drive motor.

I used to have a nice full size Sprunger lathe back in the 80's. I ended up giving it away to a friend when I moved to an apartment and just had no room for it. I have always missed that lathe. I don't really have space for a big floor lathe but I still want one!

I wonder how many of you pen turners use a full size lathe to turn your pens? How many use a mid-size? I think that DVR would be good for pen turning. It's really a mid-size that can upscale. The variable speed would give me capabilities that I really don't have now with a mini-lathe.

I picked up a new Beall 3-On kit yesterday for $60 so I could use the mini for a dedicated buffer... maybe add a burnisher to it for my leather work and make it a 4 On! LOL!

I still want that DVR and I am trying to convince myself to spend the $$$ which I really can't afford.

I feel your pain but with the economy the way it is maybe you should wait a little longer. Just my .02 and most humble opinion. Good Luck!

I have the dvr and trun pens on it and love it. For what you can get it for 1699 is a great price. I would not trae it for two jets or deltas the v.s. just can't be beat.

Bree ... I turn everything on my JET 1642 lathe. I find the 'extra' room to be to my advantage. Besides, I can balance all my stuff on the ways ... things like my coffee cup, or Coke, ALL my tools except the very one I always need right away. It's amazing just how much 'stuff' one can put on the the ways and still have room for yet one more item. :)

Bree, I turn everthing with my Powermatic 3520B. It works fine for pens and I can also turn a 20 inch bowl or anything else in between.

I vote you go get it!:) I like mine, had it about 4 years and hasn't missed a beat. That is a good price to. I bench mounted mine, as I always have to much stuff I want around within arms reach. Have the out board attachment as well which works great. Oh, there is my mini still gets used as much but as a buffer.

I have a similar set up to Anthony (PenWorks), I only turn pens and use a Nova DVR xp but on legs not bench mounted and my Jet 1014 is used as a 3 wheel buffer.

I would buy another DVR.

I went over to the store and checked it out real carefully. When I put the headstock and tailstock together the tips of the centers were very slightly out of alignment... maybe 1/32" or just under 1 mm. It was apparent when you rotated the spindle that there was wobble.

I made sure that the headstock was securely locked into the detent as it can rotate. I switched the live center into the headstock and the spur center into the tail stock expecting the problem to disappear as I thought the spur center might be the culprit. But no... the live center wobbled as the spur tip did. It had rotated perfectly in the tailstock on its bearings.

My conclusion was that there was a very slight out of alignment of the spindle. I did not want to put out $1,800 and start with a misalignment. So I passed on the deal. Too bad because I really like the lathe. If it had aligned correctly, I probably would have bought it.

Nova will fix that since if it's brand new it should be under warranty.

I might ask the guy who owns the store to get it fixed if it still hasn't sold. I don't want to have to ship stuff to Nova and wait for it to come back and then install it. That's a lot of work. I am lazy and risk averse.

I suppose the slight misalignment is one reason why this machine is having a hard time selling. Other interested turners probably noticed it as well. The Nova 1624 they had went out of the store like a shot. It aligned perfectly as I recall. I didn't get it because I wanted VS.

Oh well. Don't get me wrong. I think Tekna products are terrific. I like them a lot and believe that they are top quality... which is why I was interested This one may have slipped through the cracks.

Bree, you might want to look at the Jet 1642. It runs about $1800 (less if you shop around) and is the little brother to the PM 3520B. Plus it has a nice heavy stand.

I just bought a new Delta 46-460. I got the fever and succumbed.

I don't blame you. It looks like a nice lathe. Keep us posted on how you like it.

Billy B... It will take a week or two for it to come in but you guys will be the first know what I think of it. And I will post whatever I make first with it. I may just get a real nice kit to do something special other than my normal slimlines and cigars! Thing is that I don't sell the pens so I don't really buy the high end kits due to cost. But this could be a splurge thing!

I use mine every day and love it. I can watch the Tour De France, IRL, NASCAR when I want and more coveinent and in HD on top of that.

Oh! you mean a lathe. Don't have one yet.
