A little while ago I posted a couple of photos of some "memorial" pens I made from Canadian money blanks that Neil (wolftat) cast for me.

I think I mentioned at the time that I blew one blank up (actually, the lower half of a cigar blank) on the lathe.

Well, I got to thinkin' ....

The local bank manager treats us very well and so I thought I'd spin him up a pen.

You may also recall that I posted a while back about poaching wood from a couple of loads of firewood we had delivered: 1 of ash and 1 of oak. I snagged all of the gnarly looking burl and crotch pieces and I also muckled onto a few rotten-looking pieces...

The piece on the lower end of this pen was a particularly rotten crotch piece of ash (I'm not kidding here! LOL) and the upper barrel is the other half of the cigar money blank I blew up.

I like the way it came out

You really have to look via the links in order to see the incredible figure, spalting, and (if I do say so myself) shine on the wood...

Again, it's a piece of spalted ash crotch burl smuggled out of my woodpile.

Wet sanded to 320 then MM all the way through... 5 coats of CA

Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Yeah, it's a honkin' big pen - I wanted to display as much of the wood's freakin' awesome figure as possible... Being able to write with the darned thing is secondary...

heh

Cheers!
