I thought I'd give this a try.

Hoping the "(no sanding)" part of the thread title might catch a few eyes.

Steps:
Tamarind wood turned with carbide tools and a skew (no sanding).
Lightly sealed with an initial thin air-dried CA layer, followed by a medium air-dried layer (no sanding).
Alcohol inks dripped onto the barrels, then heat-dried gently with a heat gun.
AlumiUV epoxy resin slowly brushed onto the barrels with an inexpensive (throw away) brush.
Coated barrels gently heat-gunned to warm the resin and barrels while slowly hand-rotating the lathe.
UV cured with a 365nm (nanometer) bulb x 2 minutes, about 6-8 inches from the barrels (no sanding).
Amber UV glasses
Barrels cooled for a few minutes, then UV curing repeated x 1 minute for good measure (no sanding).
Filed the barrel ends, assembled pen.

Thoughts:
Tamarind is porous, so I'll probably do a few more layers of CA before inking on the next run - or I'll try some olive wood or other smoother wood next time.

I'll be refining the method on some game calls this week (stay tuned - more fun ahead).

Thank you for showing !!! . Will be watching for more !!!

Many thanks for the kind comments!

This is a fun and versatile technique - full of surprises, and I encourage you to experiment with it.

I'll post some pix of alcohol-inked UV resin finished game calls next week.

Warm regards to all.

Gratefully - Bob

Using UV epoxy is interesting. Before, if the ink works, do you mean you sort of sealed the wood with CA, without really sealing it?

Hi Pierre - You asked:
"Before, if the ink works, do you mean you sort of sealed the wood with CA, without really sealing it?"

The light coating of CA glue keeps the alcohol ink from soaking into the wood, thereby permitting color mixing on the surface of the air-dried CA. You can then try various color combinations by wiping off the inks with isopropyl alcohol between tries until you like what you see. Then do the UV resin finish.

Hope this helps - and best regards - Bob
