Hi,

I bought a garage full of wood a few years ago, and have had it stored in the workshop not really having had much of a look at most of it, as its mostly over 50 years old, so a fair amount of crud on the planks!

Theres a 12 foot plank, by 18" x 3" of Afromosia, or what I believe to be anyway! As its not mahogany or Iroko, which I first thought before I planed it off!

Has anyone every made any pens form this or any other items? As it looks fairly dense, and has an interesting figure to the grain (like a zig-zig effect, similar to iroko and mahogany?)

Any opinions?

Cheers PHIL

Be careful drilling and turning as the sawdust is kinda toxic...like some kind of irritant. Many people are allergic to it. Wood is kinda oily and sometimes hard to finish.

I don't think the wood is special enough to make this much effort. It is a rather plain color and grain isn't too impressive. Suggest you dig through that wood pile and find something classier to spend a pen kit on.

I made a Jewelry Box out of it a few years ago. The wood was on the brittle side but the grain was beautiful, almost iridescent. Doing flat work with it was something I would not do again, though. Turning might be a different story. Take a run at it and let us see your results.
