I have recently been introduced to a wood source in South Africa, and also Malawi. Does anyone know of any woods that grow specifically in those countries? I tried to find some things online, but to no avail. I found that Pink Ivory grows in South Africa, but thats all. So, if any of you have any information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

Thanks. Maybe he will chime in a bit on this. In addition, do any of you know what 'Snake Beam' wood is? I was told that they have this wood, but I cannot find anything online about it.

Jason, Keith is probably more of an expert on this than I am......I just turn the wood! :)

The most common South African woods are Pink/Red Ivory, Stinkwood, Wild Olive, Coastal Red and White Milkwood, Tambotie, Mopani, African Blackwood, Stinkwood, Kiaat (Mukwa), Yellow Wood, Jacaranda and a bunch of Acasia's like Knob Thorn, Monkey Thorn etc.

The Snake Beam is actually "Snake Bean". It is reddish brown, quite hard, semi-open grain and polishes quite well. For pens I have found that it looks best with around a 30 degree bias cut.

Hope this helps a little!
