I have a local sawyer with some whole cherry burls cut 1.5 years ago. The average burl is size of a car rim.

Question is how much is it worth?

How can you tell the quarltity of the burl?

Thanks

Richard

It's worth what you can get out from a customer.

Most of the time you can't tell the quality without cutting it open. Everyone is different.

You may be able to get some insights into general quality by ocular examination for checks, cracks, etc. The cut face may especially show checks or damage.

Expect to pay by the pound weight -- smaller and more problems the lower the price. I usually look for $2-$7 a pound depending --- the dryer and fewer challenges, the higher the price. Look for a longer term relationship where you get the burls and crotch pieces fresh and green so you can treat and dry them. Your risk and water weight is higher so price needs to accomidate that --

I have cut some that were superb, and the next one the center was rotten. Value is demand driven. Before buying, ask if it can be sliced. The center will give a better indication of quality.

Thank for the information, I knew there was no firm answer but I had to ask.

I don't think he'll slice one in half for me but I'll ask this weeekend.
