I got into this addiction about 3 weeks ago and it's been great so far. I've been hoarding wood like crazy....probably enough wood for 200+ pens.....in the past few weeks.

I got my neighbor into turning pens with me. He is in his early 80's and I'm 27. We enjoy this new hobby and plan on making a ton of pens. We have "orders" for over 30 so far and we are also making razors. We aren't selling any at this point. We are telling everyone that the first one is free, but the refills will cost you $100.

I would post some pics of my work so far, but I think the pics are too big for the forum and I don't know how to resize them. Maybe ill figure it out soon. Anyway I'm looking forward to learning everything I can from you guys and make some new friends.

This is one of my pens. I'm not sure of the wood, but its a comfort kit without the grip....it's the middle one. The other two are my neighbors work.

Is it normal to want to keep the pens you make instead of giving them away? The pen in the pic is #5 for me. It's turned out to be the best one I've made so far and it's mainly because of things I've been learning on this forum. I want to give a quality product instead of one with minor imperfections. I have a good one and don't want to let it go now...LOL.

Oh its normal, at least here at IAP it is. Plus there is the wood addiction. Soon you will be buying wood by the pallet load. You will start counting blanks by the thousands not hundreds, then the plastics will invade your shop. Soon the vortex will suck you under and you will never ever be the same.

You have it right when you say it's an addiction. So welcome from another addict. I worked in Huntsville for about a year. That's a great town.

Welcome from Florida

Allen,

Welcome. Turning pens is very addictive...err I mean therapeutic. About keeping the ones you turn...well, I've one in each of my vehicles, one on the desk, one I carry in my pocket, one in the shop...I think you get the picture. LOL It is very difficult to let some of them go, especially when they turn out nice. It looks to me like you're doing a fine job so far. Keep up the good work and Happy turning.

Again, Welcome from Florida.

Allan

Welcome to the group from Wichita Falls, Tx!

....and soon you will want to make your own blanks out of colored resins! The addiction is endless i promise. You never look at anythnig else the same, EVER.

Welcome aboard. Nice looking pens. The madness does not subside.

I spent a couple of years in Athens, just a short hop away from Huntsville, in the late '60s finishing up my degree at Athens College (now Athens S.U.). I do like that area of the world.

welcome aboard. You'll find there are quite a few turners in the N. Ala area. I'm right outside of Huntsville.

More importantly: Alabama or awbern?

I'm just outside the city limits as well.

I take it you don't like "awbern". I don't either. I'm more of a Notre Dame fan. I guess it's the Irish in me.
