I think it is some type of bell shaped cocktail shaker like this but maybe an antique.

I believeitis a "Hand Bell" type a chior would play (at Christmas?) You may take it to a music dealer to see if they could identify it by any markings's.

But then again put a slim-line kit on t and callita desk set!

Don, I think you hit on the answer. With the sealed bell end, it cannot be practically used as a bell. Like Becca, I had never heard of such an item, and find it fascinating.

That's my kind of bell, one that does not make any noise. after 20 years at sea where any kind of bell ringing was a bad thing I still cringe whenever I hear a bell ring.

So, you live with a tinntinabulist too? [;)]
Does she belong to the American Bell Association? If not, PM or e-mail me and I'll send, or have my wife send her information for membership.

Don, thanks for those links. That use was my wife's guess. And a member of the American Bell Association said he had one like hers on a bell forum. I guess the mystery has been solved.
Now, for martini's, does this mean "rung, not stirred" ? [8D] [;)]

I'm not sure but I think I have seen a similar thing that is used to sprinkle Holy Water on parishioners in liturgical churchs. I will show this to my good friend that is also a retired Episcopal priest. If I could remember the technical namce for it I would Google it, but can't think of it right now.

My wife directs and I play in an English Handbell Choir at out church and we are often referred to as the "ding-a-lings and they say I the chief ding-a-ling. And yes, Frank, I suppose the question would be rung or stirred. What would 007 say to that one?
Do a good turn daily!
