Update....A sad note- lost one of our own.

John Driscoll, who went by jdwhip96 on the forums, passed away yesterday. This was very sudden and absolutely unexpected. John (along with his wife, Sherry- y'all keep her in your thoughts and prayers, please) was a very active member of the North Texas penturners group. John hosted a number of Bubbasville meetings at his shop, as well as North Texas Regional gatherings. In addition to being active in the pen turning community, John and Sherry had a laser engraving business and were used widely by the local penturners. John was also very active in the last year with casting and stabilizing experiments.

John will be sorely missed by the many friends he leaves behind. I mentioned John and Sherry had a laser engraving business- what I didn't mention is that they had very few customers. I say this not because they did not do much business- they did. I say this because invariably, their customers became their friends. You couldn't help but feel welcome, especially if you've been to their shop on a cold (for us Texans, at any rate) day and had Sherry trying to get you set up with coffee, hot chocolate, or my favorite-the spiced tea. There were several times I was at John and Sherry's on Christmas eve, getting last minute things done- and I do mean eve, 5:00 or 6:00! All John's friends knew if the side gate was open, go on in, because the shop was open and there would be something going on.

John was one of those folks who always made you welcome, was always ready to experiment and take on a challenge, was an eternal optimist, and always encouraging folks to push themselves to the next level. I personally learned a lot of things related to penturning, working on a trial and error basis, with John and Sherry. Just good folks, all the way to the bone, if you know what I mean. Again, John will be sorely missed.

Sherry is still working out the details for services. There should be more information later today. There has been tentative discussion regarding a traditional Irish wake, to be held in the shop of course, Sunday afternoon/evening. Rudy (rlofton) and I will be updating with more details as they become available. In the meantime, please keep Sherry and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rest in Peace, my friend.

UPDATE...Those of you who knew John don't really need to be told that he was happiest when he was out playing in his shop. The family will be scheduling a memorial service, to be followed by an Irish wake, at John and Sherry's House/Deck/Shop. This will be a week from this coming Saturday, so if you plan to attend go ahead and mark Saturday afternoon/evening of May 30th on your calendar to keep it open. Parking at the house is limited, so options for off-site parking and shuttle service are being reviewed. Please e-mail (not pm) me if you wish to be kept updated with more detail as the arrangements are finalized.

I am schocked and saddened by the news, John & I were working on standardizing a set of test procedures for Ultraseal & spoke a few days ago.. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to John, Sherry, and his family. He was a good friend and will be sorely missed.

I am very saddened over this. John was a good friend. I cannot begin to count the number of times I would visit him to have a pen engraved and wind up spending the afternoon just talking and playing in his shop. We both had AT&T cell phone service and talked so often that we joked about AT&T being partially responsible for us being so close… because we could talk for free!

Lyle is right, John didn't have many customers… they became friends after the first visit!

John will be missed!

Thoughts and prayers going out to Sherry and the family, John and I shared the same birthday, Sept. 22nd.

Wow, I talked to John just a week or so ago. He would call me up out of the blue and ask me about something to do with casting Alumilite or to tell me about some success he had with Resinol 90c for stabilizing. We talked every few weeks. He and George come to my shop last year for the Central Texas Chapter meeting and he and George stayed longer than everyone else. John was a really nice guy. I will miss his phone calls.

Are there any more particulars about his passing? I assume it was not due to an accident of some sort. I will certainly keep his family in my prayers.

Curtis, from what I heard he was mowing the lawn earlier in the day, then doing some work in the shop- indicated he wasn't feeling well and needed to sit down for a minute, and the next thing he'd keeled over. My understanding is they think he was experiencing some type of heart arthymia, and the medical staff were not able to revive him.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of a member, I didn't know John, and don't remember conversing /posting with him, I believe I have seen some of his fine laser work.
I wish the best for his family in this time of great sorrow.

This is a good reminder to all of us...life is short and we never know when our time is up. Call up that friend that you have not talked to in a while and remind them that you care.

Good bye my Good FRIEND...John you will be sorely missed. Sherry my prayers go out to you and yours.

Just last week John and I were discussing Resinol 90, casting and Ultraseal and today my dear friend is gone. My God Bless and keep you close.

Eugene.

I only met John once at his shop and he was very nice person. I was at a eye doctor over by his house just this morning and thought about him. Prayers for his wife and family.

I am sorry to hear about this-he sounded like a great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family...

I only met John once and I can tell by the replies that he will be sorely missed. I will keep John and Sherry in my prayers as well.

Sad and shocking news for sure. John had given me some amboyna blanks he had stabilized with the 90c and I was to let him know how they worked out. WOW!! What a shocker!

Lyle: I'll be in the area this weekend. Let me know about any visitation plans for Fri-Sunday.

My prayers will go out for Sherry....what a great lady...and the family.

Do a good turn daily!
Don

I met John (and George) at the Cen Tex meeting, Really nice guy. Its a shame I wont get to know him better. Our prayers are with his family.....

I didn't know John I just joined a few days ago. I have spent the last 2 days (literally most of both days just reading posts) The name and replies to others stick out as him being a wonderful person. I am saddened that I will have never gotten a chance to talk to such a nice person. From what I've read and heard from this post I missed out.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

James

I will keep his family in my prayers. I remember talking to him at the last meeting and was really impressed with his knowledge and how friendly he was . He will be missed by everyone that ever met him.

I am truly saddened by the loss our friend, John. He was a great guy and would do just about anything to assist you in a woodworking project. He gave freely of his time and advise and humor. I will miss him greatly.

Sherry,
My heart and prayers go out to you and your family in this time of loss. I will be out of town this weekend, but will be thinking about the services. If there is anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. My cell is 214-697-0730

First off, Sherry if you need anything or someone to talk to let me know and Cindy and I are on our way.
I was in shock today when Lyle called me with the news and still find myself numb to the fact.
I considered John a great friend and enjoyed many hours playing with him in his shop.
He was one of my friends that I could bounce ideas off of and he would come back with another until we figured out how it could be done. That is a hard friend to come by.
Cindy and I will truly miss his humor and his ability to love life to the fullest.

It is always sad when someone, who has enriched the lives of so many, dies. His memory will live on through all of the the people he touched. I hope that his wife Sherry and his family will be comforted by the love that surrounds them and the community that they have built. My condolences and sympathy to everyone for this painful loss.

I didnt have the pleasure of meeting John. After reading all of the posts about his passing, I feel I do know him a little. I know he had a great sense of humor, he knew his way around a work shop, he enjoyed helping others and passing on his learnings, and most of all he was loved by many. It would seem that John was a great friend, and he will be missed.
My heart and prayers go out to his family, and to all of his friends here on the forums.

John was a dear friend, mentor, and colleague - it's taken me a week just to log back in and post my thoughts.

I spent many evenings at John & Sherry's having jack-n-coke discussing the nuances of stabilizing and dying wood, turning pens, and making segmented bowls (my area of knowledge - not John's). Discussing websites, business, and taxes.

The only thing John loved more than wood was getting a really good deal on wood :)

I never met anyone as enthusiastic, and ecstatic about wood, pen turning, and life in general as John.

He will be missed.
