Ive been wanting to try something new for a while and decided to make a new mold and give it a whirl. I had a friend ask me to make a "team colors" pen but I didnt like how the colors mix, making a new color when poured ,so I bought some silicone mold maker from US Composite and made a burl mold. I think I like the PearlX blank over the solid colors for an everyday blank but I guess team colors look ok like this. I think I need more time to play and explore the idea. Im guessing my next attempt will be a mold with smaller peaks. All comments are appreciated. Thanks, John

The orange and blue blank in the middle was turned round for another view.

I tried the the same thing but I used RTV which did not work to well, It looks like you had better luck. I like it, I may get some silicone and give it another try.

These are brilliant. I also hate the way the colours mix. I'm gonna have a crack at this.

What resins / pigments did you use for teh blue/brown in teh botom left? Can we see a photo of the mould?

I've made them before a while back and I nor the people that bought from me cared for them. There isn't the 360 design on them, only two sided.
Maybe you will have better luck with them.

I probably wont make too many. Just something i wanted to try. They dont compare to the real burl and resin casts. lol For those who asked, here's how I did it.

I used clay first in the bottom of the plastic cutting board mold and pushed the tops of the burl in to leave an impression. Then I cast silmar 41 over it to make a resin copy. Next I placed the resin burl (glued in place) on a sheet of plywood, sealed with lacquer. I used some left over compressed fabricated board covered with a plastic veneer from an old shelf to make the outter walls of the mold to be made, nailing them about 1 inch away from the resin burl. I mixed the silicone and poured it over the resin and let it sit for 24 hours. Everything peeled off like it should and made a nice mold. The silicone is called TinSil 70 Series RTV Silicone Mold Rubber and does not need a mold release and holds up to heat. Very easy to use but a little costly. I used PearlX to make the blue and bronze blank and polyresin dye from US Composites to make the solid colors. The second picture is of a mold setup before the silicone is poured.
