My youngest, Chris got his license Thursday. He been driving a good bit since getting his permit in the fall but it was still hard to let him drive off by himself today. I let him take my truck and go a couple of miles to McDonalds. He brought burgers home for lunch. His exact words were that his burger just tasted "different".

Don't worry, he will get sick of driving and then you will want him to go for a drive! I thought driving was the coolest thing ever when I started a year ago but now I know about insurance and gas expenses, stupid drivers, the stress of rush hour, and the occasional drive to the shop, and now it is just easier to ride my bike!

Congrats on the milestone and just remember to stay off the sidewalk!

I remember when my son learned to drive and got his DL... he thought it was cool.. for about 15 minutes.. then he decided he really hated to drive... still does.

I've been driving for over 50 years and still enjoy it... but like my father, I prefer the back roads to the freeways.

I remember the first time my wife and I let our son who at the time was 5 take his horse off our place and ride over to a friend's about a mile away. that was pretty chilling, I also remember the first time he drove Solo, but watching this 50 pound kid ride off on a pretty good sized American Saddle Bred had a very profound effect, my wife and I hugged each other and tried to hold back tears, nearly made it. My daughter didn't get her drivers license until she was nearly 20 sure glad she finally decided to get it!!

I have a daughter that is 24 and still no license but lives around san francisco so public transport is easy to do. To be honest, when she was practicing to get her license at 16 I was glad she never did! Thought I was going to die!! lol

I was in the navy with a guy from SF who did not drive... he was 28 or 29 and had no interest in even learning... he was a 2nd class petty officer in the navy and couldn't be assigned to certain duties because he couldn't drive.

Come to think of it, my boss in 1985 was from NYC... she was nearly 60 and did not drive. She had never had to. Fortunately her husband did drive and did not work so he could drive her to work every day.... in Houston if you don't drive you walk because there's little to no public transport.
