My wife's Uncle just passed away this morning and she is desperately trying to get to Chicago for the services. We are not well off by any means so we are trying to get any discounts we can find.

I talked to SWA and they have no bereavement fares. I can't afford the rediculous amount they want for a ticket and i really really don't want my wife to have to ride the bus. Anyone here know of any companies that have bereavement or emergency fares or something? Any tricks that could help would be SOOOO appreciated.

I have to go offline for a while so my wife can call her family, but i will be back on shortly. PLEASE... If you know of ANYTHING that can get me some discounts just post here or PM me PLEASE...

thank you....

I've had to travel for a death in the family several times in the last few months and did not really find any bereavement fares. I was able to find some pretty good fares on AirTran, however, even on short notice. I don't know if they travel between Oklahoma and Chicago, but it might be worth checking out.

My thoughts, condolences, and best wishes are with you and your wife.

Chicago is a hub of rail service, and rail travel can be pretty decent.

May want to look at AmTrac.

My condolences to you and your wife.

Amtrack is suprisingly expensive, and there arent any active train stations within probably 200 or 300 miles i would guess...

I "bit the bullet" and called in for some back up in this situation. Luckily for me, I have a brother that is married to money and i repay my debts so he helped me out. I sincerely thank everyone for doing the research and helping me out.

Sorry to hear about the loss.

You may want to try www.priceline.com I use them for all of my hotel needs and will use them if I ever need to fly anywhere. I frequently get 3 star hotels for $25 to $35 per night.

I'd second the PriceLine option. Do a little looking and pick a flight that's leaving within 12-18 hours. The airlines would rather fill an empty seat with a low ball fare than have it ship out empty. Also, pick ones that fly at off hours -- late at night or revoltingly early in the morning -- chances are there are fewer fliers at those hours.
