A couple days ago when I made that cut off sled and tuned it to extreme accuracy I was able to cut segments and glue them all up at once in one circle like this rather than my previous methods of doing two half circles and then trimming them to match each other .

After the glue cured I turned those boards into a couple bowls and just got around to apply a finish this morning .

Very nice. I notice that your bottoms are segmented. I have had a problem with cracking on the bottoms of some of my segmented bowls despite using kiln dried wood. The cracks have been in with the grain and not in the glue joint. Have you experienced this problem or have some solution? I've been thinking that I would use a solid piece on my next segmented bowl.

I have never had a segmented bottom crack in the last 20 years but I do put a solid bottom under the segmented bottom in about half of the segmented ones I make just to satisfy ones with the same concerns as yours.

Well seasoned wood and excellent glue and tight joints and proper sealing and finishing to reduce variations of climate change have never let go on any of hundreds I have made .
I can guarantee my segmented joints 100% and if anyone that has bought one from me complains about the segments opening I will replace at no cost. It has never happened yet .

How thick do you leave your bottoms? I may be turning my too thin?

Those bowls are made from a flat board as shown in the picture .
I generally start with a 3/4" thick wood to cut segments . After glued and dried I plane both sides down just enough to make it dead flat and all sides parallel to each other . So the planed board before cutting the rings to form the bowl is just under 3/4" thick .

Don't be concerned about your inquiry about splitting of segments . It was most welcome and glad to help whenever possible . For twenty years I have seldom ever posted a segmented bottom bowl without someone jumping on me about segments opening. I am well used to it. Some are from ones like yourself who have actually done some segmenting and have experienced it but by far the most have been arm chair woodworkers and wannabees that have never made a segmented project in their life but have read about concerns such as yours and it gives then a wonderful opportunity to find fault.
