Folks, I am still very new to the IAP. I have read through most of the threads about casting. Is there one thread that list what someone might needs if they would like to start casting their own blanks. Like a Casting for Dummies.
I think I would like to try to cast some blanks but I have no idea of the minimum equipment and supplies that are needed. How about throwing me a few dozen bones.

Thanks

Go to UTUBE and type in pen casting and quite a few good tutorials will pop up. I always find watch someone do something is more beneficial. There is really no big expense other than the resin. Now there are several ways of curing it and also several different resins but give that a try and report back. :)

Read the articles in the library...especially the one by Richard Greenwald. Most of the articles ar polyester resin related.
Do a good turn daily!

Grub32, a member here has several short, concise and visually explanatory videos on YouTube. This is a good place to start. Then the tutorials on this site will make more sense.

You can probably cast your own blanks for less than $50. Just go to Michael's in a few visits with the 40% off coupon and get some. If I remember the reduced prices from a year or two ago it's roughly:

Castin Craft Resin: $17
Catalyst: $3
Stamp Luster: $8

Then at Walmart get the ice cube tray made for water bottles for about $5.

That and a few Popsicle sticks and you're ready to cast your own blanks. The thing about casting is, it's as simple or complex as you want it to be. Once people really get involved in it then they suggest much more than you really need.

Technically the only thing you need is the resin and catalyst. You can use that to cast a number of household substances glued to your pen tubes. Heck, you can paint the inside of a drilled clear tube with you're wife's fingernail polish and have a custom blank. Use some rice with food coloring. Throw some coffee beans and coffee grounds in there and paint the blank inside once drilled. You can get started for as low as $20 if you're willing to be creative.

Thanks, I think I've got a handle on what I need to get started. Has anyone used minerals in their cast, pyrite or turquoise? I am wondering if the minerals would be to hard and would get pulled from the cast during turning.

One thing about casting stones is that they're going to sink in the resin. So, unless glue each one to the painted tube and hope they don't pop off during the PR hardening, I got no clue. And yeah, anything like that would bust the blank or be pulled out. Best to keep them under the turned surface.
