:mad-tongue::mad-tongue::mad-tongue::mad-tongue::mad-tongue::mad-tongue:
I was assembling 6 cartridge pens this afternoon. The last one really gave me a hard time. I always check the tube before attempting to insert the slim tranny. Saw nothing inside but I still reamed and chamfered the tube. Started pressing the tranny in and it bent at the "line" on the twist part just as the brass part was completely in. Now with a bullet nib soldered on the other end of the tube and the tube soldered in at the top of the bullet, there is no way to remove the nib to press out the "brass" portion. So, the only thing to do was to trim off the excess tranny and press the brass further into the tube with a transfer punch. Success.....no damage to the cartridge, so I thought it would be a cinch to install a good tranny, it should press in with n o problem now that the tube has been clkeared. Started to press in the second one and the same thing happened. Repeated the steps and pressed the brass all the way into the tube so I could try again. Guess what. The third tranny bent in the same place again. Gave up for now. I may attempt a fourth try in a day or so.

Mannie i have had a lot of problems installing the tranny on soldered in tube cartridges. Have taken to filing and sanding really good and a drop of grease on the brass part before inserting. Also if it breaks on you you can use a long decking screw(of the right size in diameter)to screw into the leftover tranny part, then with a wood spacer aginst the cartridge(to keep from marring)put the head of the screw in a vise and using pliers to wedge the tranny out. Put the pliers between the vise and the wood spacer and just pry. Has saved me a many cartridge. Sometimes you mat have to screw the screw in a couple of times to get it to catch good. HUgo

Soldered nib. That is allot of work. I just use 8mm tubing around 7mm tube and press the nib in. What am I missing?? Knowing Monty there will be a rock solid reason for this and I will feel very stupid. Let me have it, I can take it, I am a man.

Monty,

At Christmas 2008, I bought a bunch of slims that gave me that problem (and others). Broke dozens of trannies (on 250 pens). You may want to try replacement tranny from Woodnwhimsies.

It is much LESS frustrating.

He is probably using a bullet for a nib and not the kit nib.

Yes I was refering to a bullet nib. And the tube is soldered not the nib(bullet). I am assuming mannies are the same or he would have just knocked out the nib and then knocked out the tranny.

What I do is drill out the back of the bullet with a 7mm drill and remove the lead leaving the copper jacket. Then I solder the tube in the bullet, press this into the casing, and finally solder the tube to the butt of the casing.

I have had this happen too.I have been putting a couple of extra center bands on the tranny before trying to press it in,I think it adds some support to the thin metal,and I haven't bent one in a while.Worked for me,hope it helps.

Great tips!!!

One trick I have learned to prevent crushing the transmission on bullet pens is to drill the tube with a 1/4 inch bit just before inserting the transmission. This shaves it just enough that the transmission slides in easier but still grips it firmly. I tried this one day after crushing 3 in a row and have been doing it ever since.

I have done the same, especially when working with bullets. Drill a little ways with 1/4 and it helps allot.
