Super Wednesday & Pen Turners Rendezvous

Hi all,

I want to thank Craft Supplies USA for holding their super Wednesday again. And I also wish to thank all who organized, taught techniques and helped out in whatever capacity that made it such an enjoyable day. There was a large crowd when I arrived at a bit before 8:00 am. This was my first time to attend the clearance sale portion and there were some deals.

I bought "The Taming of The Skew" by Mike Darlow for $9 and an "Insta-Bond Dry Box" that came with two one ounce bottles of CA glue and a two ounce bottle of CA glue activator all in a clear plastic storage bottle for $15.

The small building they had this sale in was packed. Many of us were holding our treasures above our heads as we were so tightly jammed in the isles between the tables of bargains.

There were thirteen areas where demonstrations were going on. I attended three: "Pen Turning Tools and Tips" taught by Kurt Hertzog, "Closed End Pen Turning Techniques: taught by Bill Jackman; and "Fountain Pens and Their Inner Workings" by Anthony Turchetta. Thanks guys. And another thank you to Crafts Supply USA for another great Super Wednesday.

Later last evening I attended the 2009 Pen Turners Rendezvous held last night in Orem, Utah. This was held at the same site where the Woodturner's Symposium is being held. This is a very nice facility with lots of room. Kurt Hertzog did a demonstration on "Skew Fundamentals", Bill Jackman did a demonstration on "Pen Accents" and GISI Pens did a demonstration on how they do their high-end fountain pen construction.

Thank you to all who demonstrated, donated their time and talent to put this on. Everyone who paid their $10 to be eligible for the door prize drawing went away with at least that and in most cases more in door prizes. I myself won a "Tomkins Bowl Gauge" or "GAGE'T" and I guess now I will be turning a bowl or two in the future to learn how to use this new $70 tool that followed me home.

Thanks again everyone who made it such a nice way to spend a vacation day. I think next year I will attend the Symposium too since by then I hope to have broadened turning interests a little further.

Yep, sure looked like everyone is having a great time! :) I won a set of calipers  They must know I am always breaking mine  I think Glenn won the lathe at the Penters night, he should thank Dick Sing who drew the ticket. CSU made a dent in my CC as always. A good sign the economy may be turning just a bit, CSU sure was crowded most of the day in the sales office taking orders, compared to last year. The weather is great to, perfect time to be out of Arizona right now. I also had the pleassure of finally meeting Russ Fairfield, we have been chewing the fat a bit. Ken Nelson is in the demo area of the symposium and letting folks glue up and turn his laser pen blanks. I glued up a Kokapeli blank this morning, must say it was a touch challenging, but it makes a great looking pen. Heading back for more fun tomorrow. :)

I was at some of the events as well. Thank you to Bill Jackman, Anthony Turchetta, The Gisi's, and the others who presented.

Also, thank you to CSUSA for hosting the event suring the day and to Penn State for donating some prizes for the nighttime event. I was fortunate to win a PS pen drilling press.

Thanks to all for a very fun event!

Nick

Man! I wish I could have been there! Maybe next year. Thanks for the report! It sounds like a good time was had by all!

Scott.

I would also like to thank Kurt, Anthony and The Gisi's for sharing their knowledge at the Pen Turning Rendezvous. The symposium was great and full of workshops of every aspect of wood turning. There were sessions with Richard Raffan, Stuart Batty, Bert Marsh and many others. It was great to hear and learn from all of the people demonstrating their particular skill. There were also hands-on workshops put on my CSUSA that allowed people to try turning new things such a s pens, bowls, and vases. I turned a bowl and found it made me more aware of the correct way to do it, rather then the few I have blown apart trying to learn from reading or watching a DVD.
The Pen Rendezvous was fun and many companies and individuals donated prizes to be given away, so it is important that we order from the companies and individuals to encourage them to continue to support our addiction to penturning.
Kurt, Anthony and the Gisi's also did lengthy demonstrations on pen turning, how to improve one's turning, creativity, repair mistakes and encourage those present to reach beyond our present limit to go further in our desire to create beautiful pens.
Everyone there was pleasant and it was fun to meet people from all over the world, who also love wood and use their skills to create amazing works of art and share their artistry with others. It was my second time attending and I am sure that I will go again and again.
