I just got back from the 2008 Mpg that was held in Champaign Illinois today. What a great turnout. Not sure exactly how many there was attending but it was quite a few. So I thought I would show a few pics of the demonstrators.
First up was Rich (low_48) doing his demo on tool sharpening.

Next we have Billy (alamocdc)showing everyone how to make and turn a Denim pen. From the way he was talking I think we were all waiting for him to stick himself to the lathe with all the CA he was using.

Next up should have been me doing a demo of segmenting pens. Unfortunatly my wife never did take a pic of me. Hmmmm was it something I did.

Here we have Jeff in Indiana (which he goes by at the penshop)not sure of his name on here, showing how to cast his famous blanks.

And we have Rich(low_48)doing a bird house tree ornament. Sure would have liked to see his rose engine lathe but he didnt have the room because of all the wood he brought. LOL Yea right.Whats a penturner need all that wood for?

I thought it was just me until today. I thought I was developing a bad case of protuding belly. After looking around today I now realize that at least 9 of 10 penturners are a bit girthy around the mid-section. Obviously it is the penturning that is doing this to all of us, statistice don't lie. Those poppers sure were good, and the jerked pork.

Thanks for the segmenting demo. I made some notes. I have 102 new pen blanks laid out on the kitchen table.

Thanks for the photos and narrative!

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!! Al, this had me laughing so hard our foreign exchange student looked at me and said, "Okay, breath."

It should be noted that Kenny did an interesting session on segmenting. Not sure why he failed to post those photos though. I'm sure Karen snapped a few. Come on Kenny, don't be so modest!;)

Oh, for clarification, I was never worried about CAing myself to anything. But from the looks of it, I should have been a bit concerned about CAing my beard to the blank!

A word about the show... My first gathering and well worth the trip!
Rich was very helpful on sharpening tips (which I know I needed!) as well as other turnings possible.

Billy put on a great demo for making the denim fabric blanks. Im already cutting up the old jeans!

Ken, the segmenting was very inspiring and open up a whole new direction for me!

Jeff's demo on PR was very helpful, being new to pouring.

I met a lot of really nice people, shared some ideas, swapped and bought some great blanks, learned a few new tricks and had a great day. Thanks again to all of you who organized, worked and instructed. Looking forward to next year!

It was good to see everyone again this year, and thanks for the pics Ken, I think[:I] I try to add a little humor along the way while I talk, but it sure doesn't look like it in that ornament demo! Looks like I'm a little cranky, no maybe I'm just concentrating, yeah, that't it concentrating.

Thanks to all that bought some of my blanks, hope to see all the results in the show off your pens section. After I catch up a little, I hope to offer some of the same deals in the classifieds. I know you guys did your best, but I still brought home a bunch of blanks. I will have to bring them in under the cover of darkness tonight, I told my wife was that I got rid of most of them. She probably knows better.

Greg and I had a little discussion, and I will be on "the board" for next years event. While it is still fresh in everyones mind, please feel free to post or privately send me an email with suggestions, concerns, hints, ideas, etc.......for next year.

The Carpenters Union Hall was a great place, and special thanks to them. I think some of those guys might be taking home scrap from the jobs and turning pens. A real nice bunch of fellows. Kudos to Greg, Terrence, and their families for their hard work and efforts.

Great get together, fun time.

I wanted to first say thank you to all of those that set up the event. Being very new to turning and to IAP, I was glad to finally put faces to someof the names from the forum. Next I want say thank you to the presenters. Very nice job and a good mix of topics. I could have listened to many more as I really like learning new things.

I would like to offer up a larger facility for this event or another one if anyone is interested. I have access to a very large church facility and our fire department's headquarters building. They are both in Avon, Indiana (westside of Indianapolis). Not trying to change the location but simply offer it up. There should not be any fee for either facility. Anyway, the offer is there.

I brought a friend with me who has never done any turning, and I believe he is hooked. He had a great time and enjoyed the event. We talked about turning for the whole two hour drive home. (He is hooked!!!!)I fully expect him to go out and buy a lathe this week.

Great event. Look forward to the next event!!!!

Dan

Hey Rich, Im still kicking myself in the butt for not buying the rest of those Osage Burl Blanks you had.:) I'll keep my eyes posted on the classified... unless you want to pm me a price???

I just wanted to chime in about what a great meeting the MPG put on March 29th.
After having just discovered the IAP website about 3 months ago and then learning about the MPG meeting this past month, my father and I are both already looking forward to next years meeting. A big thank you should go out to the organizers, demonstrators, and various companies and individuals that donated door prizes.
Now I am looking forward not only to next years event, but more time to get into the shop to make more pens from the great deals offered from this years dealers.
By the way, Billy, after having told my wife about your denim pen demo and your woes with super glue, I think she is gettin some evil thoughts about how to stop my snoring. Looking forward to next year.

It was a great meeting. My son and I had the privilege of attending for the first. Great demos, great sellers, nice folks. It was worth our seven hour drive to get there. While I wasn't man enough to eat any of the poppers they looked like they were being enjoyed! Thanks for all the hard work that went into a meeting like this.

Chris, that was me, and you're welcome.

During the MPG, someone asked me for Nolan's IAP name. I replied "About 6 letters and numbers - I have no clue which ones".....

Just remembered this today, and have sent Nolan an e-mail to "Identify himself" here. So this is to "kick up the thread" so Nolan can find it!!

Hope this helps!
