Very few posts have ever suggested that the 10k pens stand up very well or even that they are significantly better than the 24k pens. Some have posted that the PSI pens do OK; but that is apparently due to the epoxy coating that they use to coat their hardware??

Without a doubt. I've been doing chrome kits almost exclusively and still remain on a 'low' plating $$$$ budget as far as penmaking goes.
Best value for your plating dollar IMO.

Never done a chrome kit; but from what I have read here, it is a long lasting plating. After doing the same as all beginners and starting with the cheapest 24K kits I switched to TiG and platinum and have fooled around with some of the satin kits. Haven't had any feedback on the satin kits; but I am still a little skeptical about them. I don't make a lot of pens and am willing to pay a few extra dollars for platings that I know are not going to cause me or my customers future problems. I'm not trying to squeeze every penny of profit that I can out of each pen so I use the better platings and price them to be competetive with the less expensive platings.

Skye,

This is a link to Jim of Berea discussing platings. It is from the ArizonaSilhouette site. Naturally, it is tilted toward Berea products, but is a decent discussion on the durability of platings.

Satin kits wear only little better than gold IMO. I had a satin cigar I used for about 3 months and plating wore through. BTW it had clear epoxy that wore through too.

What everyone else is saying. I have attached a picture of two pens, both with about a year of use. One is a 10k Gentlemans pen and the other a platinum Statesman. The 10k has considerable wear and the platinum has almost no visible wear. I still use some 10k stuff, but only on things that will likely not see much action.
