I bought a 1014 a little over a year ago and this weekend the headstock started making a odd noise. It sounds like gears grinding, not real loudly though. I use this lathe a lot. Probably 20 to 50 hours a week on average. I guess my question is, is it too soon for the bearing to go out? Thanks in advance for any input. Russell

Bearings can, and do go out at weird times. One set of bearings might last two years, and the next set might last 6 months. (I learned this working in an electric motor shop) If it is making noise, I would say it is time to look into some new bearings!

Shop around. You can get bearings much cheaper than the actual replacement bearings from WMH.

I discovered a slight misalignment between head and tail stock after more than TWO YEARS. Jet is sending a replacement tail stock under warranty. Has nothing to do with bearings for me, but that may be your source for bearings.

At least he shaved for us!

Ron, is there anywhere you haven't worked!? I'd love to meet you and soak up all of your knowledge...

I've never worked as a stripper, plumber, airline pilot, or surgeon. I think that's about it. I have had alot of odd jobs in the winter when my work would slow down. I seem to know a little bit... about ALOT, and not ALOT about anything (except maybe floors)

timing seems right with the use your doing. jet will send you new bearing if it under warranty you will be better of getting better bearing.

Two years ago I thought my then 3 year old and Jet 1014 had bearings going out so I bought some replacements. I'm still waiting for them to go out and holding on to the new bearings, I think I'll need them some day.

My point is to suggest to not be too quick to replace the bearings, I think I just had some shavings somewhere inside the headstock that were making a grinding noise, it went away.

I sometimes use this lathe 50 hours a week, but more like 20-30 hours of actual running time, it is five years old and still using the original bearings.

I think that Gerry was right. Yesterday I spent about 1/2 an hour with wd40 and and air compressor cleaning the head stock up. Today I made one pen already and had very minimal noise. I felt no heat buildup so I guess I will run it till is gets worse. Thanks for the advise and help, Russell.
