curly maple

It’s Remembrance Day here in Canada on November 11. I made this Maple Leaf pen out of Curly Maple to give away to someone who catches my attention on my Facebook feed. Don’t know how I’ll decide but it’s about veterans.

I'm still new to pen turning and all self-taught, but so far I think it's going pretty well.

Been wanting to try the "old fashioned" method for popping the curly maple. Finally bought some aqua fortis from Track of The Wolf and gave it a try. I'm a believer now....looks great and wasn't that hard. Very surprised that with this method (and assuming the right piece of wood) the curl...

Still confused as to the best method for noticeable "pop"....and I think the all over colored dyes are just not for me. I want the classic curl to be dark and the rest natural. What I'm showing here went through several phases and I essentially got it back down to a little BLO and some...

My firewood rescue pile is bigger than my burnable firewood pile. It is driving my wife nuts. So should I continue this practice I ask myself? I am thinking ...... why not. This one was from a huge chunk of Curly Maple. It has that classic chatoyance that I love.

Just wondering which of these two wood "feature" you find more appealing for pens. I originally was going to try general burl or curl but it would be tougher. Thanks
