When I make a pencil it is most always a pentel conversion. But, I have a need for a pencil kit. Suggestions for the best kits. Not interested in a slimline pencil kit. Thanks,
Don

I got my hands on one yesterday and built it today. It feels good in the hands but it is not something I would carry around in my everyday pocket. 5.75" overall length and 1/2" diameter body.

I do like traditional size 2mm pencil leads vs the .5 and .7 mm sizes.

I have a few of those kits. I'll have to get one built.

I have built the PSI Sketch Pencil which uses 5.6mm lead. I do like this kit too, but it certainly isn't an every day cary pencil.

Does anyone know if there are any 0.5mm lead pencil kits? All the ones I have found are 0.7mm. Being a (retired) enginerd, that is what I am most comfortable with.

The Schmidt DSM Pencil Converter from Exotic Blanks works pretty good in a Cigar kit. It should work in most Parker type pens. - Dave

Thanks Dave! This triggered my memory. I have a couple of the Perfect Fit Convertible Pen kits and one of the 0.5mm pencil mechanisms in my shop! Time to get it on the To Do list!!

Looks like ExoticBlanks is currently out of the 0.5mm version.

All this reminded me of 50 yr old lead holders in the closet from high school/college drafting days. Got one disassembled & ready for measurements.

I have not built a pencil kit. I have a couple of the EDC click kits.
My wife bought at least a couple dozen of a Bic click pencil with .9mm lead. They are less than 30 cents each and come with an eraser that works well. (Eraser is important for me) She has them all over the house.
I use them for woodworking because the lead is small enough for relatively precise marking and doesn't break easily.
And we have had them for a year or 2 and I don't believe any have quit working.
I realize this is not the same as a nice pencil kit, but for a throwaway, they are great.

The perfect fit is a Berea Hardwoods Kit. I've made several as pen/pencil sets. Che k with Berea directly or Bear Tooth Woods.

Beaufort Ink makes a pencil kit in their Mistral line available in 0.5 or 0.7 mm lead sizes. Personally, they are my favorite as they are high quality, come in a variety of platings and are designed to except the kit end/center band, or you can make them custom.

Another oddball option. Exotic blanks sells a ballpoint conversion refill. It replaces the Easyflow 9000, but has to be trimmed to length depending on your kit. I trimmed a couple to the size of the diamond knurl ballpoint, and if someone comes in my booth asking for a pencil, I tell 'em I can convert my DK line to pencil while they wait.

Yeah, I have a heavy hand and I like the .9mm lead. The .5 mm lead does not hold up for me. I keep breaking it. I do have a couple of .5 mm pencils in the drawer for use with a ruler/scale that has tiny holes and slots for fine marking. I think it might be an Incra brand tool. Not sure.
I think the kits I have are .7 and I have yet to turn one. Will see how it goes.
I like using a pencil for making lists, etc., so I always have one of the Bics I spoke of above nearby.

was it ever decided what kit with the best lead pencil transmission is? I may make a few. I do like the EDCs, but never made a pencil with one. thx
