So, as it turns out I had no idea about what clips to order when I ordered clips. I went with what appealed to me not considering the degree of difficulty that might entail. I purchased clips with a slight curve, this means the cap needs a curve that is conducive to the clip and the finial needs to be of a particular size for the clip to be flush with the finial. Anywho, it's going to take some practice. This clip is almost a correct fit, but not quite. The clip does not correctly meet the finial, but I was SO close. So, as with all of the misfits, this is now my pen and I love it.

Nicely done. Or, you could have the clip ring exposed if the the diameter of the "tab" will work.

That clip placement actually looks good to me. You've done an excellent job fitting it into the cap.
The top of the clip doesn't/shouldn't touch the cap. The bottom is more important. The bottom of the clip should just touch the cap, without applying (undue) pressure.
The advantage of a commercial clip, as Don has shown, is that you can use it as an accent ring.
All of my handmade clips, are shaped with hand files and a belt grinder. Including the ring tab. So unfortunately they are not perfectly round. One day I will get the process down to where I can have the ring visible and flush with the outside of the cap.

For your first clipped cap Michele, it is great.

Hi Darrin,

Thank you, for always having great input. I'm grateful for tips from the more experienced makers such as yourself and @its_virgil.

Tell me, I thought that since the clip had a slight curve it should touch the finial as well, but then again clips are really new to me, I actually ordered a bunch of the wrong size, but I'm making them work. There's not a lot out there that I know of that talks about proper fitment, this is where friends with experience are such a help.

The main thing, is you don't want to much tension preload on the clip. It could lead to clip failure down the road.
LOL. Making them work is kinda what turned me off the commercial clip. But it's a great way to get started and understand how the clip fits.
It can take me an easy 1/2hr to an hour to make one clip.
Those wrong clips will inspire a new model for you.

This makes sense in that some distance from the finial would be needed for the clip end to function. Thus is something I hadn't thought about really. I bought several of this clips not really knowing about proper sizing etc. They aren't really the proper size, but I'm making them work.
